    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • The open day at Taylor Wessing was very informative, but not overly so. The day was structured well, with a good mix of information sessions/presentations, social interaction opportunities, a nice lunch, and a final little competition to end the day that got all of us fired up a little bit. All-in-all, a very varied and engaging open day.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • Taylor Wessing went a long way to make us feel valued. The speakers that came down to interact with us were all very senior/important people who clearly took time out of their busy days to talk to us. We were also introduced to various trainees, all who were very willing to provide us with insights into their experience at the firm and application tips.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • There was always someone from HR or a lawyer (partner/trainee) nearby to aid us/talk to us when we needed anything, though on the whole we were encouraged to interact amongst ourselves and with the trainees around us. To that end, there wasn't much formal guidance, though I suppose this was much the point. At the end of the day, the open day was structured so as to give us an insight into the firm, and for the most part we managed to find this out for ourselves simply by interacting/immersing ourselves in the environment.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The tips on applications were very helpful in general, and the business case study competition towards the end was a great preparatory exercise for assessment days and interviews. The information given about the firm itself was likewise unique and useful, offering tidbits that one might not have come across doing research on one's own. However, such information is rather limited in its applicability, especially given that I had already submitted my application to the firm. Nevertheless, I'm sure many others who were there found it very useful

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • As mentioned above, the open day was very well-structured. It hit all the points that you would expect: information about the firm, information about the application process, opportunities to interact with trainees/partners, a business case study competition to get the creative juices flowing .The only thing lacking really was that we weren't given a tour of the offices, which seems standard practice in most such events. The parts of the offices we did manage to see were lovely though.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • It was a very friendly and social atmosphere, not too serious despite the detailed application talks. We were given ample opportunities to engage with other students as well as staff at Taylor Wessing. Despite the final competition, where enticing prizes were awarded, the atmosphere remained friendly and light-hearted up until the drinks session (that ended the day). Very welcoming on the whole!

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As this was only a 1 day open day event, the amount of time that Taylor Wessing could have spend on us was necessarily limited. Nevertheless, that they planned so many informative talks, and managed to get several partners to speak to us, is a testament to their commitment.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • This was perhaps the entire aim of the open day, and I would say Taylor Wessing did this very well. Talking to partners as well as trainees, not just over lunch or drinks but as they observed us during the case study section, really helped in giving us a feel of the firm.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • All the partners and trainees emphasised the importance of firm culture in their decision to join Taylor Wessing, thus there was a clear effort in helping us understand what life at the firm would be like. In fact, firm culture was mentioned on numerous occasions in each of the talks we were given.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • The open day gave a very unique insight into life at a mid-sized law firm, which was a refreshing change of perspective from the larger magic circle firms that always dominate such career events. In particular, I realised the importance that a welcoming and friendly firm culture can have on the satisfaction one gets from one's job, a recurring theme in my chats with the trainees.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • I live in London, where the firm is headquartered, and thus did not need any reimbursement.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Yes, there were ample opportunities. We were given the chance to talk to partners, trainees over lunch and drinks, and also during the business case study where a trainee was attached to each group.

    5/5

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • Lunch and drinks were the main networking opportunities, though due to the delay in the wrapping up of the case study competition, not many employees were present during the drinks period.

    5/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Most trainees that we asked about this admitted they were not involved in any firm-sponsored extra-curriculars and so could not talk about taylor wessing's sports team etc. However, they did give us an insight into their own personal interests and schedules.

    3/5

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Yes, open days are a great way to learn more about the firm. And Taylor Wessing's stand out in the level of planning that went into it. Where most open days are rather short/hasty affairs, Taylor Wessing really put in a lot of effort in making it an engaging and informative session.
