The Role
I really enjoyed my year at Mars, it has really shaped my future career path and taught me so much about the business world that you can't learn at university.
I felt completely valued by my colleagues, they were very willing to invest their time in me and having great relationships within my team really enhanced my experience.
I couldn't have asked for a better manager, she invested so much time in me and I always had someone to go to with any question or issue. My manager also ensured I also had a mentor who could also support me when preparing for panels or big meetings, as well as having the constant support from my team. As well as helping me with my day to day work, I also had support to start building ideas for my dissertation, showing that my manager went above and beyond in her role.
At the start of my role I wouldn't feel very busy on a day to day business as I was new to the team and the role but as I became more confident I took on a lot of extra work as my role was flexible enough to allow this. This was definitely the best part about my role as I was able to adapt it to my interests and strengths, for example I spent a lot of time with the category team after developing a huge interest in this side of the business.
I felt I was given the appropriate amount of responsibility during my role, I never felt like I was out of my depth as I always had support but I definitely felt like I had enough responsibility that I made my own mark during my placement year.
I feel I now have a real life understanding of the business world and am sure of where I want my career to go after university so my degree now feels completely relevant and very interesting now I have real life experience in business and marketing.
The Company
The office is open plan and the president sits in the same office as us - this really shows the culture of Mars. I loved this as I was able to create so many more relationships by going up and asking someone a question, rather than emailing.
Personally I had no issues with the organisation of my placement but as a whole I didn't feel there was enough support outside my team if I was to have issues.
I was treated as a full time employee with the access to training, I completed so many training courses where I learnt so many invaluable skills which will help me so much over my career.

I would really love to work for Mars again as I really enjoyed my placement with them.
The Culture
There was a great social scene within my team and I have made some really great friends from my time with Mars. There was only a small group of placement students so the social scene wasn't as great as it could have been- the only events organised between us were in the first few weeks of starting.
It was what I expected to be paying and my wage more than covered the cost of living.
With great links to London, Reading and Windsor there was plenty of choice for nightlife.
There were fitness classes after work as well as football teams and lots of opportunities for social drinks and nights out.
