The Role
I enjoyed the level of responsibility, and the value that was placed on me. Throughout the year I felt very content that my time was being well spent and that the experiences I were gaining were beneficial.
I felt massively valued by my colleagues. The team took every opportunity to involve me in the department, and I was consistently delegated with high-value responsibilities.
There was an ‘open-door’ office atmosphere, which meant that support was always offered when requested. I had weekly meetings with my manager where we were both free to discuss any of our concerns, as well as updates on my projects.
This varied throughout the year, depending on what I was working on. On the whole, the workplan fitted nicely into a full-time working week
The level of responsibility trusted to me was very high. Far more than the majority of my classmates who did placements in other companies. I was given project management responsibility for tasks, such as international events, market research projects and sales reporting.
The learning experience that I gained was not only varied, but of high quality and depth. My capabilities are incomparable to what they were before my placement year. My workplace confidence also grew over the year.
The Company
The office was very quiet, but very friendly. Everyone was very approachable and chatty.
The placement was very well organised. Before I joined the company, my manager had devised a workplan of responsibilities and tasks that I would be involved with throughout the year. The HR department had organised inductions, and update meetings for all placement students, which made the scheme feel very well thought through and set up.
A lot of effort was made to introduce me to the complex engineering industry and market. No formal training, but my department were always looking for opportunities to expose me to business operations.

Cummins is a very good company to work for. The staff are looked after well, and are respected. There are strong opportunities for internal progression within the company. However, I wouldn’t like to move back to Daventry anytime soon. Fortunately, being a global company, there are sites all over the world.
The Culture
The social scene was not exactly booming, but placement students would meet for drinks every now and then.
Very reasonable.
There isn’t really one. There’s a few locals pubs and a mediocre club, but that’s about it. However, it would be possible to go to places like Northampton and Warwick for a night out. I think that the excellent level of professional experience that I gained was definitely worth winding down the social life for a year.
Yes. There are numerous sports clubs and societies ran by Cummins employees.
