The Role
It was the best thing I've done. I met some really interesting people who I've stayed friends with and become quite a lot better at working with people - something I was truly awful at when I started.
I was frequently asked for my input on things. Some mornings all I did was run around helping people out with things. I was also trusted with the operation of the unit I worked in while the real line manager was away.
Everyone was always very willing to answer questions and take a look at whatever problem I was having, no matter what they were doing.
Because of the way the unit operated, there were some long periods that there wasn't any 'real' work, but I was able to work on other work-related projects during these.
Probably too much. I was absolutely shocking at estimating timings for things and I contributed to running a couple of projects into the ground, which wasn't great. It's nice to be trusted regardless, however misplaced the trust is.
The front end skills helped out a fair bit with the web development module and I was able to get the UI done an awful lot quicker than I would have been able to before the placement. The most helpful thing was just getting used to 'real' work. I was pretty garbage beforehand but now I'm OK.
The Company
Mostly very relaxed - until the deadline date. There are plenty of teambuilding things and it's all very open - though there is always a bit of tussle going on over the air conditioning.
It was OK. There were no problems with it, certainly.
Pretty much all the training is internal and optional. I know quite a lot more about Git in particular due to a brown bag session that happened during one lunchtime. I also learned about Grunt and Selenium through such presentations. I have never asked for formal training so I'm not sure what that's like.
Company Parties/Events
They seem very good. Most of the staff are from De Montfort University and I'm fairly certain the majority of them did placements with the company.
The Culture
Yeah. We'd sometimes go to the pub after and get lunch together and whatnot. I made friends that I still see, which is fairly impressive since I'm an anti-social bastard.
I was able to save up a fairly reasonable amount of money by the end of my placement and I was also supporting my girlfriend at the time, so I can't imagine anyone having any issues.
As mentioned before, I'm an anti-social bastard, but there are some decent pubs in Uppingham and there's plenty of stuff in Leicester, which is not too far away.
Yes, but I didn't take them up so I'm really not sure how good they are.
