The Role
I have had a fantastic experience working at Dyson and feel very privaliged to have developed many technical and transferrable skills alongside a very knowledgable team of engineers and designers. I have had the opportunity to work on a variety of interesting and exciting projects, getting an insight into many different areas of RDD.
From day 1 I have been treated as part of the team, and feel I have played a role similar to that of a graduate. I have been given a lot of responsibility in a number of projects and have had the opportunity to meet and work with senior managers throughout the business.
I have had regular reviews with my supervisors over the course of placement, being set goals and having areas for improvement highlighted which has been key to my progress as an engineer. There have also been intern development sessions run that have allowed us to consolidate our learning and achievements as well as make our own goals.
A number of projects were usually assigned at any one time, keeping my schedule busy. If at any point I have been struggling for tasks then all I had to do was ask and I was pointed in the right direction. Hence time management has been an important skill to have, which has been improved upon whilst juggling multiple assignments.
As previously stated, I have been given a lot of accountability for many assignments throughout my time at Dyson. It has not been uncommmon for me to need to speak with individuals of high authority on a number of projects. I also feel that I have been given a lot of freedom to work and learn individually, which is a key aspect for an employee. This has also helped me improve in decision making.
A lot of what I have learnt through work and training at Dyson will be highly beneficial for the rest of my degree and for when I go into my first full time job. I have picked up skills in a broad range of areas which has helped me develop as an engineer. It hae been an invaluable experience as a whole.
The Company
Everyone has been very friendly and welcoming. I did not meet a single person who wasn't willing to help with any questions I had. My team has been particularly accepting of me, and I socialised with them on a number of occasions including the Dyson Christmas party, into which the company put a lot of effort.
There was a training week planned upon arrival and I got stuck into tasks right from the beginning. Equipment was provided from the start and if I needed any further kit I just asked and someone would be able to help. Moreover, there was a clear layout of work for me throughout the placement.
I received a week of training upon arrival and after that attended numerous training courses by signing up on the intranet site. In particular, I attended an external mill and lathe course which was very benificial for my practical skills.

Very appealing due to the amount I have enjoyed the placement in general. The company creates a fantastic working environment that is challenging and rewarding.
The Culture
I got to know the other interns very well and we socialised on numerous occasions, going for meals and competing at the local karting circuit regularly after work.
I was very fortunate to be working close to my family home, so I saved a lot of money by living without the extra costs. There were a number of pubs local to Dyson which made it easy to socialise on a Friday after work.
Due to Dyson being situated in the small village Malmesbury, there were no clubs or bars available. However, due to living back in Bristol it was easy to enjoy the nightlife in the city centre.
There were many opportunities to socialise and participate in sports. Additionally Dyson held a huge fancy dress Christmas party, as well as the 'Dyson Challenge' which were both enjoyable events.
