The Role
I enjoyed my placement as I met a lot of people. There was always opportunities available to participate in different activities such as: online learning, shadowing opportunities and givebacks (voluntary work). However, I didn't enjoy my role as much as I could potentially have as I wasn't provided with a lot of support during my placement from my manager.
There was support from many different colleagues as they were all very understanding and offered to help me when possible. I was provided with a lot of advise regarding Univeristy and further studies beyond University from different colleagues who followed a similar educational path.
My manager worked remotely so I very rarely saw them. It was extremely hard working over the phone as they would often be miscommunications. My manager did attempt to support me throughout my placement but due to their busy schedule I very rarely got one to one time to discuss my concerns and issues.
The begin of each week I would be very busy completing daily tasks and communicating my findings to my superiors. However by Thursday I would often be left with a lot of idle time. But this idle time did provide me with the opportunity to complete some online learning.
When my manager was off on holiday I would often be left in charge. Which was great as I was able to communicate with a lot of people that I would not have spoken to previously.
I feel like my placement year was good, as I was able to establish what career path to follow. I was able to develope my interpersonal skills as I was able to successfully communicate and network with colleagues across the world. I did not reiceive a lot of formal training which cause the job to becoming difficult to handle, on this aspect I believe I could have received more training that would have assisted me with my degree.
The Company
Due to flexi desks it was not a great atmosphere. I would never know the person I was sitting next to unless I was sitting with the other interns.
The induction days were great. However once I started I didn't receive any formal training as the previous intern had left when I started and my manager worked remotely. I felt there was no organisation behind my starting week, I was often leave wondering what I was doing there.
There were reviews every 3 months where I would receive feedback from my personal development manager. These sessions were great as they highlighted the areas that I would need to improve upon and suggestion on how to achieve the improvements
Working from home
Due to the lack of support and face to face time with my manager I have been put off applying for a permanent job upon graduation.
The Culture
There was a nice atmosphere amongst interns, everyone were very approachable and great to speak with.
As I was based in London the cost of socialising and living were above average but the salary provided london wages to buffer out the high living costs.
It was really good as it was in London. Loads of transport links were available to go elsewhere too.
During the start of my placement there were many meet ups set up after work. But they became discontinued after 4 months.
