About You
I enjoyed the interaction with other people with similar ideals. talking to the trainees who were only too happy to share what they had been through and to give an honest appraisal of what the good and bad parts of being a lawyer in this field is like.
The trainees were all friendly and non-judgemental. We all had to do a presentation and they were all extremely supportive. Even when I felt that I was not confident of myself, it was clear that my opinions and ideas were considered and thought through.
The trainees were very happy to take questions practically throughout the whole presentation. They kept emphasising that they had been through our current position and understood the tremendous volume of questions we had. With that assurance, we were able to ask anything we were unsure of, and there was no sense of embarrassment at doing so.
Commercial awareness is certainly a skill that will help one in degree studies and beyond. MY commercial awareness certainly improved during the group game which we played, especially at the discussion stage where each of us came out with difference ideas that others had not thought of. The process of thinking was certainly something that could be improved while observing others, and I feel like my awareness of commerce has therefore improved.
The Company
It was highly structured with a given timetable which we stuck with throughout the insight. The programme covered all essential groups, about the firm, about application, about particularly valued skills, the business game on commercial awareness. And of course, the lunch and evening wine reception.
Most of the people who attended were clearly very happy to share their personal experiences and ideas. It was amazing how the exchange of ideas flowed so readily and I saw what possibilities existed which I never contemplated.
Personal feedback was not given however. This is something which possibly could be improved, which would held individual's personal training and development/
It was limited to the questions we could ask the trainees. If you were extremely prepared and armed with many questions, then the trainees would definitely reply and it would then aid your understanding in how it is like to have such a full time role with the company/ firm.
Quite a lot, due to the trainee's openess which was refreshing forthright. However the event was definitely too short to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the company's culture.
quite valuable, although certainly not conclusive of what route of law I would decide to pursue in future
Everything Else
I was reimbursed for expenses for transport
Yes, at any point of time we were welcome to talk to the trainees. Two partners were also available to speak and they both hosted a q and a session. They were especially friendly and approachable, and entertained questions on law in general as well as their specialty
There was plenty of time to network as we did throughout lunch. There was an evening cocktail event at the end of the event as well, which was optional and we could stay as long as we wanted. This is certainly one of the strong points of this insight event.
It was briefly mentioned what employees could get involved in - pro bono. Other areas were not discussed. However, at all times the staff were all open to questions and if you had any questions about activities that employees could get involved in outside of work, you just had to ask,
Yes definitely. Any Open Day insight event in a commercial law firm would be a good experience and I would recommend it to anyone who is contemplating a career in commercial law. Also, people who have decided to join it but want more in depth knowledge of this firm in particular.
