About You
I enjoyed this insight very much. It was very informative and helped me understand the different roles in each sector of the firm as well as the specific workings of the firm.
Everyone was extremely helpful and, no matter their position in the firm, was willing to answer any questions or queries I had about their role or the application process in general.
We were given detailed information about the application process and given the perspectives of recent graduates working at the firm which was very helpful.
In terms of my studies there is not much that this day will add. However, with regards to future job applications and the need for work experience this day was very helpful in making clear the qualities that they are looking for.
The Company
Very well structured. Everything ran smoothly and there was no time at which I felt the organization was lacking. The day was also very varied, encompassing presentations from a range of employees and the chance for networking at the end.
The atmosphere was formal and yet in no way daunting; everyone was very welcoming and eager to help and chat. I think it gave a realistic feel as to what it would be like to work at BlackRock.
The day was not so much about training and development, but rather a chance to inform ourselves about the company and the industry in general. In these terms however it was extremely efficient.
I think the insight day gave a great general feel to the atmosphere of the firm, and we were given talks about what a typical day would look like. However, as we did not get to experience the actual processes first hand or have the chance to spend some time getting involved (this was not the aim of the day) I cannot really comment on what it would feel like to work there, other than I think that I would enjoy it, it seemed like a very amiable environment.
It was very useful in understanding the company culture, especially the extent to which they use their own investment platform (Aladdin) as this seemed to be at the core of the ethos and culture of the firm. It was something that differentiated them from other asset management companies.
I still have no definitive path down which I am certain I want to go. However, this day really helped me in narrowing my search and in giving me all the information I need to make a decision in the future.
Everything Else
It was an unpaid insight day and I live in close proximity to the offices so there was no need for reimbursement.
Yes, ample time was left at the end of the day to network with senior management and recent graduates. This was the most useful part of the day and really helped me get an understanding for what goes on at the firm, especially the roles and challenges faced by the investment team. I had some really interesting and informative talks.
As above the networking opportunity was great, a real addition to the day and I must say that everyone I spoke to seemed extremely enthusiastic about their job and eager to help in anyway possible.
There was no extensive talk about work/life balance. However we were informed that the hours were nowhere near as long as competitors in the industry and no one seemed to have any negative comments to say.
Yes, it was thoroughly informative and a useful addition in helping to pinpoint my career path.
