The Role
Insightful to the company and industry.
Everyone on the project made me feel very welcome and gave up their time to help me and chat to me about their work
Pete Graham took an active interest into my work and my personal future but also gave me the independence to work for myself
Some waiting around between experiments, particularly slow at the beginning of the placement as wasn't enough to do
I was allowed to work independently and when Dave Littlewood was away on holiday I took responsibility for his work too for 2 weeks
Has given me a good reference for my CV and broadened my experience within types of equipment etc in chemistry. Too early to tell how useful that will be! Presentation experience etc all very useful
The Company
Some of the process science office were quite cliquey and interaction with them was very limited. Appeared to be areas of tension between some people
Quite well organised but evident that it was the first year for the placement to be linked in with the grad scheme.
Gave me presentations allowing insight into other areas of the company. In particular it felt that Pete Graham invested his time and advice.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
I was offered a placement on the assessment day for the graduate scheme but will not be taking it as I wish to pursue a PhD first. Also been discussion about returning for another placement next summer.
The Culture
It was quite good but there are few young people on site and the others on the summer scheme were mainly from the same university and predominantly male!
Pretty similar to Manchester given that it is the same area of the country!
We went to the cinema a few weeks and had a few nights out. But given that it was a relatively short placement it was fine. I expect with longer to get to know people, things like that would increase.
