About You
It was very enjoyable. I love the fact that it gave such a broad knowledge of all the areas within the front office, but was also so detailed and informative. Also so many of the activities were interactive, such as the trading game (markets), pretend sales pitch to a client (wealth management), and a case study - deciding whether to finance a company's proposed project (Corporate banking). It meant we not only were learning so much about what the different divisions do, but trying it for ourselves. The work shadowing opportunities in two of the divisions was also a great way to gain first hand experience.
I felt extremely valued as all of the recruitment representatives made an effort to know your name and speak to you through out the week. They were extremely friendly and approachable.
There was an extremely good supportive system in place whereby if you had any questions or problems, the Barclays representatives would try to help you to solve them as best as they could. They emphasised at many points throughout the week that if we needed anything at all, we could always come and ask/talk to them.
I believe the skills and information I gained will be extremely useful in pursuing a career, in terms of applying for future internships/graduate programmes, and also in being able to actually choose your career path by knowing what the different job roles do. I feel there were skills gained such as teamwork and communication skills which can definitely help you in university for instance, when working on group projects as part of your degree course (worked on a project throughout the spring week that we presented on the last day).
The Company
Extremely well structured. We were given a schedule at the beginning of the week, showing us exactly what tasks we'd be doing, with each day being planned down to the minute.
It was a very supportive and friendly atmosphere - not too competitive or assessing. I think even though you know you're being assessed throughout the week for a fast track onto their summer internship programme, the recruitment representatives make a big effort to make you feel comfortable and welcomed.
There was lots of opportunity to speak to bankers one on one which helped you to learn so much more about day to day job roles, challenges and what divisions do/aim to achieve for the bank. This really helps your development in terms of gaining a better idea about what career path you want to pursue, and the group projects/interactive activities help to give you some of the skills necessary.
There were many opportunities to be explained different job roles, however the work shadowing was a great way to see it for yourself, really helping you to understand what the role was contributing to Barclays overall, how much team interaction there was, or technical skills needed.
There was a session where we spoke with analysts within the front office about each of Barclays individual values, what they represent, and how we can demonstrate them in every day tasks. This gave a good overview of the company culture and the values they abide by.
Was still very undecided as there was so many interesting areas of the bank, however you are made to choose by the end of the week what are your top two choices for a summer internship programme.
Everything Else
yes we were paid as well as having our travel expenses reimbursed
Many opportunities, in every task there would always be representatives from Barclays to come and speak about their division, and there was also a networking evening on the wednesday where you could speak to a number of representatives.
Very informative, you were able to ask anything you wanted. The networking evening was especially useful, having so many employees from banking, markets and PCB. There was also free food and drinks supplied.
Some employees mentioned life outside of work however this definitely wasn't an aspect that was emphasised or properly spoken about in the week.
Definately! You learn so much, have so many opportunities to meet different employees, and can workshadow in two divisions.
