    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Great opportunity, without doubt one of the best years of my life. Three things make this year: 1) Work placement, 2) Studying for a qualification, 3) Social aspect. The combination of these three ingredients for the year makes it something unlike any other year any individual would get elsewhere.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very valued. Placements vary however my colleagues and team understood the impact I made, did not treat me as an intern and my contribution was valued as if I were a full-time employee. This made the experience much more interesting and certainly allowed me to learn more.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Managerial support was great. The team at the firm I was at was very much aware of the program and understood it's value to the firm.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The majority of days were very busy, there was not often a time when it was quiet, and each day was different. Long term projects were involved and there were goals to achieve however day-to-day activities could vary, giving a range of exposure to different teams and skills to apply throughout the work placement.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • To the extent that I was still part of a placement, I feel that I was given a lot of responsibility and helped to build out the team that I became part of from the start.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • As referenced previously - the skills gained ranged from confidence, ability to organize, communicate effectively, learn how to be efficient in the workplace, multi-task in a range of different areas, speak in meetings, conferences and present as well as technical knowledge of the area I worked in and generic office/computer skills. Whilst I have already completed my degree and this aspect is not relevant, all of the above will help me no end in my future career.

    3/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Great. Often stressful, however this was part and parcel of the role and helped me learn to deal with pressure. I would say it was no different to that of other office atmospheres and support was always available, if required.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Fairly organized within the firm. Interns who joined midway through the year did have a specific week of training however this was also said to be a little too much. The organization of the placement was well set up for my needs and if I needed additional help then I could ask.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company I worked with understood the value that recent post-graduates can offer to firms and that learning is not only from a top-down perspective however bottom-up also.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 1/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I was lucky to continue with the firm following my placement.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes. Being in New York lends itself to the social scene, this goes without saying.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Expensive, however again, this lends itself to being in New York.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Great. New York has probably one of the best, if not the best nightlife's in the world.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes. Opportunities were provided by Mountbatten throughout the year and this gave interns the opportunity to volunteer and become engaged in activities, other than work.
