The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at Cancer Research UK, I had the opportunity to lead on my own projects within my team and felt that the work I completed added value and was appreciated. Having a group of interns all beginning together was really great we had a detailed induction day and it helped us all to feel at ease from day one.
The team that I was interning with made me feel welcome from day one. I had clear and detailed project plans outlining what work I would be doing throughout my internship and my colleagues were supportive and offered guidance where necessary. I have had the opportunity to feed back to my team about the work that I have completed and my findings have been carried forward and are now being used in day to day business processes. I have felt very valued by my colleagues.
A lot of support has been offered throughout the three months I have spent at Cancer Research UK, I have had fortnightly 1-2-1's with my manager where we have been able to discuss progress, workload and my personal development, setting out a plan for the internship focusing on skills I wanted to develop as well as any new opportunities I wanted to make the most of.
The majority of my workload did not have strict deadlines however me and my manager seat targets for work to be completed to ensure I was making progress with my projects so that they would be finished in time for the end of the internship. On top of this I took on additional responsibilities in areas that I felt would develop my skills, this increased my workload so that I felt busy each day but not overstretched.
I felt like I was given a lot of responsibility throughout my internship, when I was asked to complete a piece of work I was able to work through it in the way that worked best for me and although the work I completed at the beginning of my internship was checked over, by the end I was given full autonomy over the work which I had been given.
The skills I have developed and the training I have received during my internship have helped me considerably. We've had training days for CV and interview skills which have improved my job applications and given me more confidence in interviews as I now have tangible examples of the skills that the role requires.
