The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed this internship. I looked forward to coming into work every morning because I was surrounded by lovely and supportive people doing work that was both valuable and challenging.
I felt very valued by my colleagues. They offered help when I asked for it and also let me get on with my work because they knew that I could do a good job. I frequently helped out with their work when I asked if I could help out and they could trust me to do a good job. I felt very valuable both with my work and ability and also in a personal capacity.
I worked closely with my manager in the team so I got a lot of support when I needed it. Everyone in the team were always friendly and willing to help out when I asked for it. My manager and I also met formally for 121s on a weekly basis and had even longer and more extensive chats to discuss progress and personal development and feedback 3 times during my internship, once after 2 weeks, the other half way through the internship and the last one at the end of the internship.
The majority of the time I was busy. I always had something to do every day but like with everything their are periods which are busier than others. When my projects were not too busy, I volunteered to help out with other work or undertake being a team leader on a fundraising project so that I could work on that also. I was never bored or stuck without work for long, and most of the time if I didn't have anything to do it was either because I was waiting for responses or because I had gotten on with my work efficiently and completed it early.
I was given a lot of responsibility during my placement which I enjoyed and was grateful for. I was put in charge of a few projects which I worked on individually and then I was given a major task in a very big project for my team.
I developed confidence, project management and time management skills as well as getting experience as a team leader and giving presentations. We also had a CV and interview skills training day which will definitely help me apply for jobs after university. The skills which I acquired will help me balance my studies and work efficiently to get the best degree I can as well as working with teams as president of a society and fundraising. I think that all of the skills which I have developed, including the ones which I have not listed will help me because I now have the experience to give to a future employer.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was always very friendly. It was open plan which created a community atmosphere and everyone was dedicated and kind and willing to help each other which fostered a great sense of friendship and encouraged everyone to do the best job they could and to help and aid everyone else out.
The placement was really well organised. The person in charge of the running of the internship was very organised and frequently emailed us with new opportunities to help us get involved and make the most of the internship. She also organised an induction day to give us an introduction to each department and talked us through personal development, CV skills, interview techniques and talked to each of us about what we wanted to get out of the internship. She arranged training for us to develop our personal skills and she liased with both the interns and the managers to complete reviews throughout the internship to ensure that we stayed on track and were supported. The internship was flexible around our other commitments and the days which we worked were not set in stone which worked extremely well for all of us.
Cancer Research UK invested a lot of time into all of the interns, regularly giving us opportunities to volunteer and learn, including high value fundraising events, presentation experience and many others. They also arranged for us to have a CV and interview training day and encouraged and supported us to take on our own fundraising projects for CRUK. They spent a lot of time helping us learn and develop as a group and individually each intern had their own manager and some people had a mentor who helped us learn and develop.

Very appealing. It is not exactly what my dream job is but I enjoyed my placement so much, the company is fantastic and the office was fun,. lively, and supportive and everyone was good at their jobs that I am definitely going to apply for a job after graduation.
The Culture
The interns met regularly every day for lunch to socialise and we also met sometimes after work to chat or to celebrate a birthday. Everyone was incredibly nice and we all made the effort to get to know each other as much as possible. I also spent time outside of work with the colleagues in my team and they took me out to lunch in my last week of the internship.
For London it was relatively cheap and you can almost always find somewhere relatively cheap nearby
London is a lively city and even if it is not in the immediate vicinity there are always places to go not too far away
There were loads of opportunities to get involved outside of work. Not only were there regular fundraising events which we could volunteer with but there were also fun evenings to fundraise for individuals' fundraising targets. CRUK also put on regular sports sessions such as yoga outside of work which were fun to get involved with
