The Role
I worked with exceptional people from whom I learnt a lot and who were a lot of fun to be with at the same time. I got a lot of exposure and did work that actually added value.
They gave me a lot of responsibility and praised me for whatever I did right and to the extend possible made sure I got to rest whenever the workload wasn't too pressing,
I got a lot of support from the senior people, I could go to them with every question, they made an effort to get to know me on a personal basis and help me make the most of the internship. The HR department always checked my progress and was willing to facilitate any transfers to different division, should the need arise. They also helped me get as much exposure as possible to different division, so that i got to know other areas of the bank as well.
I was busy as that's what the job in M&A is about, I was prepared for long hours and that's what it turned out to be, but whenever there was not much for me to do, I was told to go home and rest.
From the end of week 1 I was given a lot of responsibility, even though my work was always checked by analysts. I did work that added value, I worked on parts of models and I really felt like part of a team.
My Excel and PowerPoint skills have improved considerably, but also the banking-specific knowledge I learnt helps me with some of the financial modules and my dissertation.
The Company
It was great, people were very friendly, always willing to help.
I got exposure to deals from different sectors, so I got to work with many different teams within the bank. I used many different valuation methods, worked both on pitches and live deals. To help keep the work-life balance ok, there were plenty of events lined up for us by HR, so they even made sure we had fun!
I got great one-week long external training by the AMT company, which got me up to speed. On top of that we got weekly sessions organised by analysts and associates from our division and a lot of on-the-job training as well, with our colleagues always there to run us through any more complex matters.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Car
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
I got an offer to join my chosen division straight after graduation.
The Culture
Everyone got on well with each other, someone must have put a lot of thought into putting the team together.
As it was Canary Wharf the costs were high, however our dinners and cabs home were covered by the company. Also, we received an accommodation allowance.
It was great, there were many pubs full of bankers every Friday's night!
There were a lot of events organised by the HR department for all the interns, including talks, discussion panels, parties and community work. Each team also made sure that their interns get to see the fun side as well.
