The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed the internship- mainly because colleagues and managers were supportive and encouraging.
My role as an intern was respected by the entire team and the work that I contributed to the project was, I felt, openly and genuinely appreciated.
My manager was very approachable and supportive. We had weekly one-to-one meetings and catch-up sessions every week and I was always confident that assistance would be given if needed. I received helpful feedback at regular review meetings and was offered valuable career and skills advice.
Fairly busy- there was never a moment were I did not have a task to do. Having a busy workload was a very useful exercise in how to prioritise tasks and manage my own time.
I noticed a gradual increase in responsibility throughout the placement. By the end I had taken ownership of one particular aspect of the project and had two side projects that I had taken from start-finish. I felt that I was also given the freedom to work out my own approach to tasks.
I felt that intern's personal development was highly regarded by my manager and those running the scheme. As well as tailoring the project to the developmental needs that I had highlighted at the start of the internship, we were encouraged to attend presentation skills workshops and CV clinics run by the organisation.
The Company
Friendly and welcoming- everyone at the organisation is generally happy to help and easy to get on with. I was able to organise a couple of coffee meetings with people in different departments to learn more about the different roles in the organisation.
The set-up and organisation of the internship was well run. Our contact on the team was always very helpful and supportive, and would sort out any issues (not matter how small) very quickly. We were given plenty of information before we started and there was a clear structure to the internship.
Intern personal development was highly emphasised by the organisation and I felt that my manager was receptive to my own personal development needs. As well as formal courses, my project tasks were often tailored towards the skills that I had identified at the start of the internship.

Travel loan
Although the internship does not lead onto a role in the organisation, we were encouraged to look out for internal vacancies. I would very much like to work with Cancer Research UK again in the future.
The Culture
Yes, this including organised socials throughout the internship by the placement organisers. We were strongly encouraged to team up for fundraising events which was another great way to get to know everyone on the placement.
London = Expensive- but travel (monthly travelcard) and lunch (up to £4 / day) was paid for by the organisation, which was really helpful.
Very good- lots of pubs and bars very close by.
Yes, we were encouraged to organise or own intern fundraising events alongside our project work. Given that most placements were <5 days a week, there was plenty of time outside of work to do other activities.
