About You
Coming from a non-law background, the Open Day at Baker and McKenzie was extremely useful and left me with a great idea about the company's ethos and outlook. It was an incredibly fun day, very interactive and the trainees made me feel very at ease in such a new environment.
The trainees spoke to us all with great respect and were genuinely happy to offer us their advice and experience. At no point during the day did I feel like a burden and instead I felt like a prospective employee there, as if the companying was vying for my support rather than the other way round!
During the activities the trainee solicitors were patient and happy to offer constructive criticism- I think more could be made of this during activities to give those attending a better idea of how to think more like a lawyer. Perhaps it would also have been a great insight to see some trainees attempting the challenges themselves, or giving us a display of how they would approach the task so we can see some real law in action.
The greatest thing the experience has taught me is how to be commercially aware and have a global outlook, two skills that will help in aspects. It has also taught me how to have the courage and trust in your own abilities.
The Company
Extremely well-structured- every minute was used to the advantage of those attending the open day and varied also to keep us attentive through the long, intense day.
I felt very comfortable in the Baker offices and the delightful staff and trainees. The open day was really a testament to all the wonderful things I have heard about the company, such an inviting company who take a genuine interest in those who share their passion for law and people.
For the short-time period, Bakers invested a lot into our personal development, imparting what skills they could and then offering us the chance to put it in practice.
The open day has certainly left me with a clear understanding of the brand ethos and has left me wanting to find out more about it too. It was great to get to meet a range of Bakers people at all levels of the firm. Perhaps to make the experience even better, it would have been nice to have another speech or two from other members of the team. I also would have liked to hear more about the global aspect of the firm and opportunities abroad!
Extremely useful, this is the strongest insight of the day- I certainly feel like I know the Bakers culture after even one day- that's a very impressive feat.
I think the tasks we completed were well chosen and gave a great insight to what it takes to be a lawyer. If there was more time it would be have been great to fit in a couple more activities!
Everything Else
I didn't need my expenses to be reimbursed as I live in the city and have a pre-paid travelcard, but Bakers kindly offered the chance to get transport covered!
Lots of opportunities throughout the day, it was lovely to meet so many of the members of the Bakers team who were all so happy and willing to give up their time for us.
The lunch hour was particularly useful, however I think it would have been good if members of the team offered us business cards or an email address to contact them further for advice. Perhaps it would be nice to have smaller groups and assign a trainee to each group so that they can build greater relationships with them during the day, of course still offering the chance to meet other members of the team.
Bakers were very thorough about presenting all aspects of company life, including the social activities. It was great to hear first-hand experience from the staff as well about their extra activites, made them seem much more human than the stereotype of lawyers!
Certainly, it's my first law open day but from speaking to other open day attendees, it also seems like the best!
