The Role
Cummins Turbo Technologies provided a great showcase of real life engineering, at world class company, I had a fantastic time, learning from leaders in their field, in multiple rotations through engineering departments in the company
I was given a good amount of responsibility in delivering key project items, in aerodynamics I produced and delivered simulation results, in project management I ran a company wide project, in applied mechanics I analyzed use data to determine design life, at all these tasks my opinions and input were treated equally, given my decisions were backed up by sound engineering.
I had a MPDS mentor and a pastoral mentor for booking holidays and things like that. each rotation I had a manager who was a technical mentor for that rotation, who would help solve technical problems as colleagues with minmal hand holding.
this placement is what you make of it, if you spend a lot of time trying to solve problems and help your teams then more work is always available.

the organization and project management skills were world class, along with internal tools and common six sigma training, I use the skills I learned at cummins every day. The deep technical skills are very marketable and bespoke, I got chance to learn subjects I wouldn't get chance to at university, and apply them straight away to real world engineering problems.
The Company
The atmosphere is quiet and professional most of the time, occasional tea breaks and a chat over some biscuits are not frowned upon, the impression here is that everyone is very good at what they do, very relaxed, but focused on their jobs, and always willing to explain their project and work to you.
There was regular feedback and updates, with 4 presentations spread out the year to showcase what we had been doing to the other placement students, there was training available every month on lots of different topics, a 3 day six sigma training course was arranged for all, and there is a great 8 week GD+T course.

Subsidised/Company Gym
Above 25 days holiday
Working from home
the year long placement is a good stepping stone onto the graduate scheme and if you leave a good impression there is a great chance of getting future work with the company
The Culture
We regularly plan activities and have been a close knit group of engineers and non engineers alike since we all started, the previous placement students have some over lap with the new ones an introduce us to the city and plan some good events like nights out and BBQ's
huddersfield is quite cheap, although my rent was the same as my student accomodation in manchester at £403 a month, with the salary this is really manageable.
huddersfield is ok, a bit quiet, leeds and manchester are close by so that's good,
lot's of environmental and charity opportunities through the works policy of every employee, every community, where we are encouraged to help out while being paid by work, to enrich our communities.
