About You
I really enjoyed the Discover EY programme as it gave me the opportunity to understand more about what a job in assurance or tax at EY would really be like. It was particularly useful to learn about the sub-service lines within those two services because during internship applications one has to select their chosen sub-service line, which can be a difficult decision.
During my time at the firm I felt that I was constantly looked after and made sure that the time was both useful and enjoyable. This made me feel particularly valued by the firm as it was clear that they wanted us to use this to help our career development.
I think that we were given plenty of guidance during the insight and how we could make the insight most worthwhile for us. For example, we were often advised to use it as a time to build up our network within EY so that we could approach any individuals if we needed any career advice in the future.
The skills I developed will be of great value to me beyond my degree. This is because a lot of information was given to us about how to perform best in assessment centres in subsequent internship and graduate scheme applications. On the second day we even put this into practice by doing an extended project for a mock client and a presentation of our findings at the end. After the presentation we were given detailed feedback, which was highly useful.
The Company
The programme was very well structured. A detailed agenda was emailed to us several weeks before the programme and this was well thought out and stuck to during the programme.
The atmosphere was always very positive amongst both the candidates and the EY employees. I believe this really made the insight a valuable experience as everyone was keen to learn more and find new ways to improve their performance in project work. It also meant that all the EY employees came across as really approachable and friendly people who were happy to give advice all the time.
The company invested a lot of time in helping with our personal development. This was mainly in the second day when we carried out the extended project to analyse a mock client's business and finances. At the end of this task we were provided with feedback on our performance and potential areas for improvement.
The insight helped me understand what life would be like in the firm because we were given plenty of different talks from employees at all different levels. So, we were given a broad range of opinions to hear.
The insight helped me understand the company culture through talking to plenty of different employees and getting a feel for the type of individual they are. To me it became quickly apparent that all the employees were approachable and friendly people and I believe that reflects the company culture really well.
The content was valuable in helping my decision about my future career path because the talks given were very detailed, particularly with regards to sub-service lines. This was useful because this is important information when it comes to applying for internships.
Everything Else
EY were really helpful in reimbursing the value of my train tickets.
There were plenty of opportunities for networking during the programme. This was mainly during the dinner at the end of the first day in which there were plenty of employees present to talk to and ask their valuable advice on questions about the job or the firm.
The networking events were all very informal and I think this was a really good idea as it didn't feel forced. So, this meant that candidates on the programme could freely approach as many employees also involved on the course as they would like. All the employees were happy to answer an questions and gave really valuable responses.
Yes, during some of the talks employees detailed some of the activities they were involved in. These ranged from EY sport to volunteering days and charity work.
I would recommend this to a friend because I believe the skills I have learned will be invaluable when it comes to future applications and assessment centres. I also think the programme was useful for the information that it provided about working in assurance or tax.
