The Role
I have had the chance to work with a range of departments throughout the business, which has given me a valuable insight into how a company such as this runs whilst keeping the experience fresh and interesting.
I was treated like any other member of staff- people would offer help in a an undemeaning manner and my input in meetings was respected and valued. The company holds high importance in treating everyone equally.
Whilst people are happy to offer help, there was sometimes a certain amount of disconnect between the work I was expected to do and the amount of guidance I would need to complete it well/efficiently.
I was not busy or stressed for the majority of days on placement. Whilst this may seem like a good thing it was often the result of too little work to complete.
I was given the chance to undertake projects working primarily by myself, lead projects where numerous other people were involved and also to be involved as a primary point of contact in projects lead by other placement students. The amount of responsibility I was afforded was good.
I have not yet returned to my studies, but there are many elements of placement that I will be able to bring back to my degree, such as training in software and familiarity with formats and processes.
The Company
The majority of the time the atmosphere in the offices is pleasant and light hearted, although could be overly quiet at times for the number of people.
In comparison to other people on placement with this company or others, they appear to have a far better plan of action. Whilst I appreciate a stringent plan will not always work out, the company did not appear to know what the greater scope is for my placement at any point, with an on the fly approach failing to give coherent development to the year.
The company put on many corporate training events, as well as work specific training modules. Although there was a large volume I don't personally feel they had as large an impact as they could have, often due to their belated timing and very general nature.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
National Travel
Financial Bonus
There is a considerable graduate scheme with the company, with former placement students currently being put through it. Graduate prospects seem high.
The Culture
There were 32 other placement students so socials and 5 a side football were often organised, in addition to other sports/events already present at the company.
Housing can be very variable. Socialising is not too expensive yet overpriced for what it is.
The only reasonable nighhtlife is a half hour drive away.
5 a side football, badminton and a sports and social club that frequently did trips were available - there was something for everyone.
