The Role
Positives. The year has consisted of continual training and new opportunities. Broad outlook of various financial disciplines. Negatives. Work load is inconsistent. Location is not ideal.
Positives. My initiatives have been well received. Colleagues have trust in the work that I deliver. Negatives. Not much team involvement. Recognition is quite limited for placement students at Cummins when compared to permanent employees. No scheme has been set up to recognise placement students at Cummins.
Generally guidance and training has been given, however there have been occasions where work has been requested from me with no previous experience / given guidance.
Work load can be quite inconsistent, but plenty to take you through the week. Generally there is a high workload towards the beginning of the month, but these extra hours can be taken off at less busy periods.
I have been responsible for a few projects, plus have taken up new opportunities where available. The responsibility has allowed me to but my own improvements into work processes.
The variety of work has given me a broad spectrum into various finance and accounting concepts. I have been able to apply theory from university to my placement. The placement experiences and skills gained are also going to be used in my dissertation.
The Company
The atmosphere is quite laid back and relaxed. The office has been recently refurbished and has a modern open plan environment. During critical periods, it can be quite hard to concentrate due to the surrounding noise from other departments.
Very few objectives were set at the beginning of my placement which has meant it has been hard for me to reflect on my progress. The year as a whole has been quite dynamic, which has allowed me to mould the role around myself, however the lack of goals has made it difficult for me to progress.
Detailed training has been given into what my job role consists of, however only limited training was given on the use of systems which meant it was hard to find the necessary data. There are development days for improving presentation skills, however no other areas were covered in detail.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
Healthcare/Dental
Within the finance function, there has been no change across the year.
The Culture
There have been occasional nights out, however Darlington is a small place for a quality experience.
Very cheap area to live. Train travel is quite expensive in comparison to other regions.
Quite a small town, therefore not much variety.
Plenty of volunteering opportunities are available.
