About You
I had a lot of fun, met a lot of nice people working at Deloitte, made a lot of new friends and enjoyed staying in one of the best hotels of the city. On the morning and early afternoon of the first day, we kept going through case studies, one after the other and by the end of the day, I was drained of all my energy, which made it hard to stay focused and enjoy the activities. However, the second day was more relaxed and we had more fun activities.
I felt valued to a high extent because I met several persons from different divisions of the firm and they all gave me their time and explained in great detail how their division works. They answered all my questions and directed me to other sources of information. However, I felt that nearly all the activities were conducted in groups and there was no individual exercise to gauge our potential or identify weaknesses.
I received a lot of support. As mentioned above, I met employees from all divisions at Deloitte and they all gave us a pretty good idea about the work they do. The people who were running the event also gave us a lot of support in terms of career advice, interview tips, presentation techniques, etc.
It is definitely going to help me in deciding what I want to do later because now, I have a good idea of what Audit, Tax Consulting, Audit Advisory and Consulting are. There was also a guest speaker who helped us improve our presentation skills and that is definitely going to be helpful while doing presentations at university or even outside university.
The Company
I felt that the two days were not balanced in terms of content and activities. The first day was very hectic and we went through a lot of case studies whereas the second was too relaxed, from my point of view. Apart from that, our two days were well structured, with well-deserved breaks every 2 hours. We had presentations from each division at Deloitte and just after their presentations, we worked through a case study with them.
Everyone was friendly and seemed to have a lot of fun. The employees also seemed happy to help.
They invested a lot of their time to make us understand the work that each business line does. We also got a training on presentation techniques, which I found extremely helpful. The interview skills session was just about the usual STAR method and general interview preparation guidelines.
It helped me understand what to expect to be doing and what the working environment was like in each business line. The employees gave us a good idea as to what activities full time employees at Deloitte take part in, from volunteering work to social events.
We did not go into the actual offices but spent all our time at Deloitte in a conference room. So, we did not get a lot of exposure to the work environment itself but we heard about it from the few employees who came to talk to us. We were told that the company focusses a lot on its people and I can totally believe that, given the really nice hotel we got. The company also invests a lot in training its employees. We were also told that the company has a flat structure and there is a lot of communication at all levels.
Even after the presentations about each business line, I still feel a lot of them overlap and I am not yet sure whether to go into consulting or corporate finance but I am now pretty sure I do not want to do Audit or Tax Consulting.
Everything Else
I was reimbursed expenses but only up to a limit of £50.
Yes, we had breaks between the presentations where we could go talk to the employees and on the first night, we attended a dinner at the hotel and there were two employees at each table and we could talk to them about pretty much everything.
They were alright. The dinner was a fantastic opportunity to network but the breaks were not that useful because we were on a tight schedule and thus, could not meet all the people we wanted to talk to.
The employees gave us a good idea as to what activities full time employees at Deloitte take part in, from volunteering work to social events.
It's a great experience. It was the first time I went to an insight programme and I found a lot about the industry.
