The Role
Really enjoyed my time at Metaswitch. Didn't know much about the work that I would be involved with before i started, but was made to feel at home and enjoyed it very much.
The work that I was given to do had real value and had an impact on the people working around me.
This aspect of my internship was fantastic. Had a great manager and mentor who would given me help support and guidance when I needed it, but also gave me the space to get on with things on my own.
Regular communications with my manager meant that I never had too much or too little work on my plate, and all the deadlines were manageable.
I wasn't given any choice on the projects that I was given, but within those projects, I was given able to direct how I wanted to proceed to order to complete the task.
The technical skills didn't assist me in my degree studies as my degree doesn't involve any computer programming. However, the thinking style and discipline that I developed has certainly been of use.
The Company
Good hard working atmosphere, but also nice a casual.
The company takes on many interns every year, and as such has developed a well organised and structured internship programme.
Was given plenty of help with any work that I was stuck on. Before each task I was given, I was briefed on the technical aspects of the task. Throughout my placement, I went various education seminars to learn about different aspects of the job and company.
Sports and Social Club
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Was given the opportunity to go straight to a 'final' interview with the company, before they offered me a job.
The Culture
All the other interns were very sociable and overall had a very good time.
Edinburgh is not the cheapest of cities to live and work in.
A lot to do do in the evenings in Edinburgh, especially during the Fringe festival.
Quite a few clubs run by people within the company. Had spare time in evening and weekends to get involved with other things as well.
