About You
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Taylor Wessing. I was able to gain invaluable insight into the Taylor Wessing culture and how a City law firm operates on a day-to-day basis.
Every person of the firm was extremely curtious and more than willing to answer any questions which in turn, made me feel like my time spent at Taylor Wessing was appreciated.
My supervisor made it clear that although I may not have the requisite background knowledge required for a certain task, he was there to answer any questions and offer any support I needed. If I ever had an issue photocopying, any number of people were there to offer guidance.
I now have a better grasp and deeper understanding of the reasons why I want to be a solicitor and specifally in a City firm. I can use this experience to write better answers on applications and clearly convey those answers in interviews.
The Company
Probably one of the most impressive aspects of the placement was how well prepared and organised the HR team was. We were given a set schedule at the start of the placement and two out of the four days had organised lunches where we could network with other trainees and supervisors. It was clear that the HR team put time and effort into planning this placement and it clearly showed.
The atmosphere was very pleasent and I never felt intimidated or that I was getting in the way. Everyone was very kind and willing to offer assistance if need be.
Our placement was only four days and we were generally shadowing our supervisors for the majority of the time so this question might not be that applicable. However, it is clear from the information we recieved about vacation schemes and training contracts that the firm invests significantly in their trainees.
The insight into the actual day-to-day of the profession to me was one of the most benefical aspects of the placement. Until I got to spend time at Taylor Wessing, I was unsure of what working at a City firm was actually like and further, if I would like it. Because of the placement, I can now use first hand expeirence to speak to the reasons why I want to work in a City firm.
Although I was only sitting in one department, I was able to chat with other lawyers and ask them questions about the kind of work they do and how they enjoyed working at Taylor Wessing which gave me insight into the culture and values at Taylor Wessing. We were given a commerical challenge at the beginning of the work which was largely about researching into Taylor Wessing's culture so that provided an even greater oppertunity to get a feel for the company culture. Overall, I think my experience shadowing my superviser and talking to other lawyers provided the biggest oppertunity to learn the company.
Getting to see first hand different practice areas work was a good oppertunity to focus my career goals on specific areas of law that I think I would excel at the most. Any uncertainty regarding commercial law in a firm the size of Taylor Wessing was cleared up and most importantly, the experience inspired me to work harder to ensure that I secure a role at Taylor Wessing or a firm with similar values and company culture.
Everything Else
The placement was unpaid.
There were many opportunites to network throughout the week included a networking lunch and we were encouraged to walk around the office and chat with lawyers.
There were two organised social/networking events throughout the week that gave us ample opportunity to meet other trainees and gain insight into the firm.
Outside activities were touched upon in our induction presentation although I'm sure more detailed information can be found online through one's own research.
I would absolutely reccomend Taylor Wessing to anybody seeking out work placements with City firms.
