The Role
The intellectual challenge could be frustrating at times, but the feeling of accomplishment justified it.
In general, just the right amount, with weekly status reports on top of regular check-ups and pointers. Unfortunately there were one or two weeks when both my manager and mentor were away, and it wasn't as easy to find guidance.
I worked to a healthy 9-5 schedule with generally one or two things to work on at a time, so I was rarely bored and enjoyed free evenings.
I was the sole designer and creator of a software tool (my main project) and though my direction and progress was tempered by discussions with my manager, I was ultimately responsible for the final application.
Not so helpful in my particular degree studies, but certainly a big boost if and when I choose a career in this field.
The Company
As you might expect, you don't get 24-7 partying in an office full of programmers. But there was general positivity and fish take-out on alternate Fridays.
My mentor had a well-thought out plan for ramping up my skills and launching me into the main project.
My mentor devoted as much time as was necessary to ensure I was never stuck for too long and had all the necessary knowledge. Any clearances or permissions I required were provided quickly.

Company Parties/Events
I know that I would be a valued employee and encouraged to develop in whatever way I want. The pay is decent relative to in-class peers.
The Culture
Company housing was the perfect environment to make bonds with other interns. Interns regularly organised social events at evenings/weekends and the company even paid for us to eat out on more than one occasion.
Company houses were nicely subsidised. Obviously living that close to London is never going to be dirt-cheap.
Not much aside from good pub quizzes.
I played Ultimate (frisbee) once a week, went out for drinks, dinners, and films, played Laser Quest twice...
