The Role
The programming was more enjoyable than I had expected, and being able to be involved in the design process was really fun.
I was doing genuine and useful work, and felt valued by my team and manager.
My mentor and manager were extremely supportive, keen for me to err on the side of asking too many questions than too few. I was regularly given feedback, and had one-on-one status meetings with my manager at least once a week.
There was enough to keep me going - but not so much that I was permanently stressed. I never had to sit twiddling my thumbs.
By the end of my placement I had been given a spec from which to create a high level design, and then implement it. I was given almost as much responsibility as a normal team member, and it was all the more fun an experience for it.
The company were very keen for me to take away useful communication and organisational skills, as well as those directly related to software engineering.
The Company
It was laid back, but a quiet enough atmosphere to actually get some work done.
Metaswitch ran an excellent internship programme, from the interviews to my time there, everything seemed to work exactly as it should.
I was given feedback on what and how to improve, and the company were clearly trying to make me as good as I could be.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
I was offered sponsorship for my next year at university on the condition that I return as an intern again next summer.
The Culture
Frequent visits to the pub, and several clubs open to interns and permanent staff alike.
Metaswitch provided subsidised housing, so that was very cheap. Pubs were more expensive, but often the company would pay
Enfield has good access to central London.
There were loads of lunchtime and after work clubs interns could get involved in.
