The Role
I really enjoyed working for CTT. I experienced a wide variety of tasks and different teams and did work that was of real value to myself and the company.
I did feel valued by my colleagues. I was always thanked and congratulated for the work I did where it was felt to be important or of high quality.
I was given sufficient support and guidance whilst being left to work independently as far as possible.
This was quite variable, I often found myself very busy but there were times when work was slower.
The amount of responsibility increased during the placement and I found myself handling increasingly complex projects as the year went on.
I think the skills I have developed will be of most help in my future career. This placement has shown me that many of the things learnt at university will not be applied regularly when working as an engineer, and the experience of using industry standard problem solving tools will be very useful when looking for a graduate position.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office is good with the majority of people happy to spend time helping or advising you where required.
The company has many years experience of taking on placement year students so the process is quite well organised.
The company makes a large variety of training courses available to all employees. They have a hire to develop policy and view the placement students as employees of the future.

I very much hope to return to the company as a graduate.
The Culture
I am a mature student with a young family and do not socialise as much as my younger colleagues. However I do believe some of the other students went out together and lived in shared houses together.
The cost of living in Yorkshire is very good, especially compared to the south of the country. I cannot really comment on the cost of socialising.
I cannot provide any input on this area.
Yes, there are opportunities to get involved with the IMechE young members panel, and opportunities to volunteer during work time for various local good causes.
