The Role
Working for Disney has been amazing, I've learnt so much from taking a year out. I now have a better idea of what I want to do after I graduate and feel much more prepared for full time job.
From the very beginning my team made sure I knew that my role in team was important. I am often given tasks that require a lot of responsibility, which is great because I feel trusted. I always get constructive feedback on my projects and I know that if I ever needed to ask for help, I can.
My supervisor has been great, he has been really informative, supportive and always happy to answer any questions I may have. Whenever I need to get one of my promos signed off, my manager has always given really constructive advice and ideas for making improvements. I feel as though my work is highly valued.
I'm fairly busy. In some months my workload will fluctuate and I will find myself very busy every day of the week. However, when it does get quiet I have been able to help others with collecting material for promos or other small tasks, although I never have to wait long for something else to pop up. I enjoy being busy and it has allowed me to really work on my time-management skills.
I feel as though the title of 'intern' hasn't made much of a difference to my place in the team. I am treated the same as everyone else and have been expected to perform as well as other producers on the team. I make promos that go on air- just like the full-time producers. I feel the role itself requires a lot of responsibility as the work I create is a reflection of the brand. At the same time, the support network in place does allow for mistakes and problem solving.
My studies heavily rely on theory. I feel my placement has given me the opportunity to see the industry fully and I know have a better idea of where I want to be. I now know what I need to do to get into the right line of work. The main skills I have learnt on my placement are; time-management, professional communication and staying calm under pressure, skills I would have struggled to have learnt from academic readings.
The Company
The atmosphere was really nice and laid back. If ever I needed to speak to someone I knew I could go over. Our team was very tight-knit and supportive of one another. It was a very pleasant place to be.
The hand-over process could've been slightly longer. Once the previous intern left I felt a bit stuck. However, as I learnt new things I made sure to note them down, eventually I managed to create a 14 page handbook for all new members of the team to use. Although it took me a little while to get to grips with my role I slowly found ways to keep track of what I was doing, and feel confident that the next intern will have a good idea of what to do before I leave.
In my first week of working at Disney I went on a training course for Adobe Premiere Pro, which I have come to find invaluable. I now love the software and know how to use it really well now. I was also able to develop on my skills with After Effects by doing small animation tasks.

I would love to come to back and work for Disney in the future. It's a great company to be involved in when getting to know the industry.
The Culture
Yes, music companies would occasionally invite the creative teams out for social events with other companies. It was a great way to network and get to know people on the team a bit better. There are a lot of other interns at Disney as well and we would often go out for lunch when the weather was nice or out for drinks in the evenings.
It's London so it's bound to be more expensive than student living, but it's been amazing. I've been able to do so many things while living here. I was lucky enough to find a house in walking distance to work, which saves on commuting. Generally drinks and nights out are expensive but there is a lot you can do for free. The Hammersmith Apollo is right opposite the office, I managed to get tickets to see Live at the Apollo this year as they are always free (first come first serve).
Hammersmith is quite quiet for nightlife, it only really has pubs but it's central location means you can go anywhere. There is a cocktail bar round the corner from work where Disney employees get 2 for 1 any time of the day, which is really good.
I got involved with Disney's volunteer program which had so many opportunities going. Every so often you would get an email through to help out somewhere. Disney do a lot for Great Ormond Street hospital so there was always something you could get involved in. Apart from that there was a choir, baking clubs and a whole range of seminars you could go to.
