The Role
Most of the time was a struggle but the rare occasions that I did enjoy make up for it a bit.
Colleagues treated me more like an assistant than anything else.
They did try to guide me, but the guidance wasn't very useful.
A lot of work was expected of me, which would have been fine if the work was relevant to my degree and I could learn something from it, however, much of my work entailed packing boxes and doing administrational tasks not related to science.
I was at times responsible for vital parts of the scientific process. I was also responsible for some administrational and menial tasks.
I think I have gained an insight into how work in the industry can be, and it has definitely assisted me in making choices for my future career. If I was to work in the industry in the uture I would make use of some useful skills learnt during the year.
The Company
Not very friendly or relaxed. It was mainly an atmosphere of work and responsibility.
I had to relocate from Welwyn Garden City to Harlow in the middle of my year, and then relocate to Stevenage after that, which was not stated in my contract. Other aspects were however well organised.
There were meetings and presentations set up for placement students.
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Overall I did not enjoy my time enough to actively seek a job with the organisation, mostly because I would not want to work with colleagues like those I worked with. However, if I was to get a job with a different team of people I might consider it.
The Culture
The social scene among students was good, but among colleagues (in my case at least) it was not good at all.
Relatively cheap, but there wasn't much to do.
Not much to choose from except a standard club and cinema.
I guess if you really looked for something to do you could find it, but you would have to search for it.
