The Role
Unilever was a really exciting place to work. There is a great atmosphere with the other placement students and I enjoyed being given a fair amount of responsibility and flexibility.
I definitely came away feeling valued. As the projects I was working on were useful and relevant to the work of my colleagues I felt like a fundamental part of the team by the end of the year.
There was a good amount of training available, and it was tailored to each individual employee so you could pick and choose what skills to develop. My manager gave me the time to learn new things and widen my skill set.
For most of the placement I was very busy, although towards the end when I was wrapping up and handing over all of my projects it was hard to get stuck in to anything.
I was given responsibility over projects, this was probably one of my favourite things about working at Unilever.
All the skills I learnt and mainly it was about communication with people, will last forever. I've learnt to adapt to communicate to the right audience and also develop a way to work that helps me to develop myself.
The Company
There was a good vibe from the office, the open plan setup worked well as it allowed you to rub shoulders with the leadership team on a daily basis
Unilever has a solid set up for students, with a buddy system and continuous involvement from the HR environment
I was able to attend events and join calls, purely from an experience point of view. Once your a graduate, training is editable as part of the scheme and it prepares you for the rest of the work ahead.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Subsidised/Company Gym
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
Automatically placed to the final assessment day for the graduate scheme and I will be joining them again this year.
The Culture
Yes, and over the summer there were summer placement students also. We organised events amongst ourselves and kept in contact throughout the year.
Liverpool is cheap to live generally and if you find the right location and preparing to commute for a bit, then it's quite good value. The shopping centre keeps everything exciting and varied.
Generally, clubs don't really charge much and drinks are at a relatively good price. Clubs and bars in Liverpool and mostly in one place, so you can't really go wrong.
Extra curricular activities were mainly down to the individual and the company supports the idea. However, activities outside of work is mainly organised by groups of colleagues.
