The Role
I had an amazing time on placement, and would be happy to do it as a full time job.
I worked in a very close group of scientists, there was a very good group dynamic which I fitted into and I felt looked after as the youngest member of the team.
My group leader was very patient and excellent at explaining my role during my placement.
Some days there was very little work to do and other days there was too much work to do. I think that this is just the nature of the job.
I was able to work completely independantly and be trusted with important administration and daily tasks.
All the techniques specific to science will help in any future career in life. I learnt many transferable skills (e.g. self confidence) as well.
The Company
The office was open plan and therefore was a very relaxed and friendly environment. There was a good feeling of team spirit as we had coffee and lunch together
GSK has industrial placement students every year and so they know how best to use the students to help development of new scientists and help progress their own company.
I was allowed to take part in mentoring with a chemist as well as spending time in other labs upon my request to learn more about the different areas of the company.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
Healthcare from home
I would be very happy to return to work for GSK, as I really enjoyed my time there. However I would be apprehensive about living so far from where I am originally from
The Culture
There was a very good group of social students who I lived with and socialised with regularly. However during the weekends a lot of people, myself included, would return home or visit their Universities.
Living costs in Stevenage were similar/slightly cheaper than I have been used to at home and University.
There was only one area to go to, a few nightclubs, but I always had a good time there!
Living near London meant I could socialise and explore there. I was able to join the local athletics club.
