About You
It was one of the best weeks of my life. Meeting people from all over the UK studying different degrees but having the same interest was a great experience.
When shadowing or listening to a presentation I felt like the people actually wanted me to get the concepts and they didn't feel the need to use terms that second-years would not be able to understand.
We were given schedules for the entire week and were told what to do in detail. If we had any questions there was always time to ask.
I think the most important thing I learned was that networking is actually very crucial – definitely something we do not get taught at university. I also have a much better understanding of courses I should take in my following years to pursue my preferred career path of risk management.
The Company
The structure was very clear from the beginning. I liked the fact that we had skills development sessions on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and shadowing on Tuesday and Thursday. Because of that we never felt like we were doing a single thing for too long.
The atmosphere was great. Everybody was great: people from the HR department who organised the week, employees who we shadowed, and my fellow participants. Everyone was very friendly and approachable.
I think everything we did benefited my personal development more than the company. I learned about Risk, Audit, Finance, and HR as well as developed presentation and other soft skills. I have not completed any actual work for the company since it was a Spring Week so the entire week felt like I was being invested in.
Getting 4 hours in each division is very limited so we didn't get to see everything that people within those divisions are doing. However, this is to be expected since before starting to work at RBS I would also not only go through the summer internship programme but the grad programme as well.
We experienced the culture since the very first day. Not only were RBS' values a recurruring theme but the culture could be seen through the way every single employer spoke to us.
I applied fot the Spring Week in order to experience Risk Mangement. After shadowing in Risk I am sure I want to further pursue a career in it.
Everything Else
RBS provided for our travel expenses, accommodation, and meals.
There were networking drinks on two out of the five days. We could also network while shadowing.
They were great. Employees made us feel they were truly interested in us and dicussed our career paths with us.
There was a CSR event (+presentation) on our last day devoted to this topic.
Definitely, it has been one of the highlights of my university life.
