The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement and it gave me a good understanding of the industry which I wouldn't have had if I went straight into my final year of study at university.
Everyone within the office was very supportive and helped me whenever I asked.
Due to the busy nature of the industry managers gave me support as best they can. As long as a meeting was booked in advance, support and guidance was provided when needed.
The initial weeks were slow whilst I was allocated work via a resource schedule. However, once I was settled in I never struggled for work, and rarely when I didn't have anything to do I was proactive a seeked work which wasn't a problem.
I believe I was given the correct amount of responsibility whilst on placement, supporting senior members on projects and managing smaller tasks on my own.
The experience gained during placement will be invaluable when working for the company as a graduate. Without doing the placement the opportunity of working for EC Harris may not have been possible.
The Company
The atmosphere was good within my team, although due to the economic conditions morale dipped alot during my placement year.
The work placement was well organised with a day of induction at EC Harris HQ in London. I also attended other training days for year-outs throughout the year.
The company was very helpful in personal training, with many colleague answering my dissertation questionnaire during my final year of studies. Sponsorship for my final year at univeristy was very helpful and a graduate position job offer meant the company could not have done any more. In the current economic climate I am very grateful to have a job within the industry.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
Having successfully completed my placement I was offered the position of Graduate Project Manager in their Leeds office.
The Culture
There was a very good social scene amongst fellow year-outs which has developed further now that many of us have progressed into graduate positions.
The cost of living and socialising within Birmingham was comfortable.
Birmingham has a good bar and nightclub scene as well as many live gigs going on.
Due to living in student accomodation playing for student football teams enabled regular exercise throughout the year.
