About You
The entire two day workshop was brilliant, it was great to have a go role-playing case studies and have the opportunity to talk to people from across the firm. However, I feel that my shadowing could have been more insightful as there was not really anything planned for what I would be doing and I ended up wasting most of my time just sitting in silence.
Everyone at Herbert Smith Freehills was very welcoming and very happy to answer our questions.
During the case studies we received a lot of great feedback on how we approached the task. Trainees also were very helpful when we had questions on applying to vacation schemes and gave us very genuine advice in regards to our questions about the firm and how they found studying law at university.
I think this has been a great motivation to study harder and do my best to get a place on a vacation scheme. I also think that speaking to people from different departments in the speed-meet was a great insight into the different areas of law that are open to me in my optional modules that I will soon be selecting at university, so it will help me make a more informed decision in regards to that. Beyond university, I think it has helped me understand the difference between exciting topics of study and exciting fields of practice.
The Company
Everything ran so smoothly and was well organised, the only down point was the aimless 4 hours spent shadowing a trainee who had no idea know what to do with me.
Everyone seemed very happy in their work and very happy to talk to us. It was very welcoming and very friendly.
Good feedback during the case-study
I think there are still some aspects as to what kind of work you are expected to do during your seats as a trainee that I am still unclear about but generally there was a lot of effort put in to giving a clear and full overview of what a full-time role at the firm is like.
Talking to people at the social on the first day was a great way to find out about the company culture, as well as being able to talk to people in the Shard and during the speed-meet. Everyone was very honest.
I think this has confirmed to me that I would like to do an LPC after I graduate.
Everything Else
I was not paid or reimbursed, but the option to be reimbursed for travel expenses was made available, however I simply didn't need it as I lived nearby anyway. Similarly, breakfast, two lunches, a dinner, free drinks and a free trip up the shard was very unexpected and more than enough. The experience in itself, regardless of those things would have been worth it.
At every single stage.
Fantastic. Wouldn't change a thing.
Yes, there was a lot of emphasis placed on the Pro-Bono work employees do. It was also mentioned that employees receive discount membership to a local gym.
Yes, I did recommend it to a friend. She subsequently applied and came to the same insight.
