The Role
It has been fun and enlightening
My colleagues have been very thankful for any work I have assisted them with.
I had a mentor who has helped me to progress within the role.
Some days I have ten tasks and other days I have one. I haven't enjoyed the stop-start work flow and I'm much more comfortable with regular daily tasks.
I am happy with the amount of responsibility I have been given but know there is some confidential work I cannot help with. Hopefully my replacement will be able to sign some kind of non-disclosure agreement to overcome this.
It is always important to have good presentation skills during years at university however I chose a placement that doesn't exactly help with any other aspect of my degree.
The Company
Very corporate. The office is based in an industrial park in Bracknell.
I thought that having the previous intern train me was really helpful however my role has adapted over time and I am finding my tasks have become less interesting.
There were lots of opportunities to learn about other aspects of the company and there were several training opportunities too.
International Travel
I am told that a placement year is akin to a 'year long interview' for the graduate roles. There are lots of graduate roles but not a lot of variety - obviously very business orientated.
The Culture
There is a large community of interns so there have been quite a few socials planned as well as fundraisers and internal events.
Rent in Reading is inexpensive if you opt for student housing. To commute from Reading is quite costly for fuel on a monthly basis - I'd recommend lift-sharing!
In Bracknell there is no nightlife - that I know of. Interns generally go out in Reading but it is pretty poor to be honest. A few nice places to eat and bars to have pricey cocktails but only one or two clubs.
There have been a few opportunities for charity-based fundraising.
