The Role
Overall, I had a great experience spending a year at IBM - given great responsibility and a big insight into working for a global company. The work varies role by role, some are very lucky and get to be very hands-on (going to events etc), whereas others working in ops tend to have very "spreadsheet-y" roles.
I've felt very valued by my colleagues, especially my immediate team. Always praised when going above and beyond my duty - however some people can take advantage of your intern status and ask for things to be done that aren't in your job description - but if you have the confidence, they can always be halted with a quick and stern email.
At IBM, you are given a Task Manager which is the person who gives you your day-to-day jobs, as well as a Personal Development Manager who monitors and supervises your development over the year. So overall, a lot of guidance is given - whether you take advantage of it or not.
Business tends to depend on the time of year. In ops, the busiest times tend to be the end of each quarter because reports need to be run. Marketing is busier in the summer months due to more events being held. For me, I would say I was busy 4 out of 5 days - and I'd "work" from home on the 5th day.
Again, this varies person by person and role by role. I would personally say I was given a lot of responsibility - I singlehandedly organised a business conference to Dublin, as well as other events throughout the year. Alongside this I would run reports for management review and also headed a mentorscheme for schools in and around London.
The main skill I developed was confidence - before starting at IBM, I was scared to pick up the phone to ring the bills company - now I'm leading global conference calls where I have to yack on for 30 minutes without stopping. I've also developed the cliche skills such as Excel, time management, organisation.
The Company
As someone who was sat with a group of interns, the general atmosphere in the office was very upbeat. The sellers in our team are very friendly and are more than happy to come and chat to us when they're around.
I think the work placement was set up very well - IBM recruitment has a dedicated foundation team which kept us updated prior to starting and throughout the year.
This definitely depends on your manager and PDM. My manager helped me set up shadowing opportunities such as the UKI CMO for IBM. You also have to be willing to develop yourself by reaching out to people and attending events and calls.

I think they're very appealing. IBM has a very reputable Grad Scheme (although they're limited to sales and consulting roles).
The Culture
There was. A Facebook group was set up involving all of the placement students and would be updated on a regular basis regarding upcoming events etc.
Cost of living varies - majority of people live in Clapham which on average is about £650 a month rent. But, London is very expensive - as long as you are prepared to pay above and beyond a fiver for a pint - socialising can be done!
Lot's of good bars in and around Southbank - and only across the river from Covent Garden.
IBM has a GiveBack scheme where you can get involved in volunteering events outside of work.
