The Role
I loved my placement year. Lots of support from friendly staff and lots of opportunity to 'network' with the massive interns community. Work was varied which kept me interested.
Valued. My work contributed to the team. Some tasks were admin based.
You get two managers with IBM. I was really support by my task manager (they give you your day to day role). I was able to adapt my role to suit me and able to attend non-day job related activities to further improve my soft skills. My PDM (personal development manager) supported me with my career development and with issues that came outside the scope of work.
Very busy! You can always take on extra work if not. There were also plenty of volunteering opportunities to get involved in as well.
As much as you want - you can always ask for more.
Skills developed so much!! I am so glad I did it. I didn't receive much training - i found it difficult to find. Soft skills will definitely help my future career. My degree is not related to IBM at all, so cant comment on that.
The Company
Atmosphere was relaxed but at times it wasn't the busiest place to be.
Very well organised. Lots of events and development opportunities for us. Assessments have clear structure from the start.
I have no qualifications that will be recognised anywhere else. I was able to leave my day job to go to skills workshops.

Very appealing - I have learn so much more about what IBM does, which has made me want to work at the organization as a graduate. Definitely applying back! It is unlikely your department could offer you a grad role - that's not the process. Grad roles are very different to placement roles.
The Culture
Definitely we all lived together and with 70 of us in one location - someone was always doing something.
Very cheap and fun- Portsmouth
Not too bad - only a few places to go in Portsmouth. But there are a lot of good cities that are very close and have amazing nightlife. i.e. Brighton, Bournemouth and Southampton.
Lots of opportunities mostly working with students and in schools.
