The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed the year and would recommend to anyone to get the experience. Only slight issue is not getting a full experience of the business world, however this is kind of expected.
Everyone is very welcoming and the other employees make sure you have lots to do.
Task manager is very supportive and great to work with. Some support from Personal Development Manager but do not see them very often or speak to them. Just there for reviews.
90% of the time I have been very busy. The remaining 10% I have had stuff to do but just not really busy. Very rarely have nothing to do.
Given quite a lot of responsibility for my role but could have been given a lot more in other areas outside of my day to day tasks.
The skills I have developed will definitely help me when I go back to uni and beyond. You learn so many things that you just would never experience at university. It will also help me when I am looking for a job after uni and then getting settled into a new role.
The Company
Often very quite but worked closely with people that were in the office every day so good with them.
Very well organised.
Lots of different activities you can get involved with in terms of training and education that can help with personal development such as workshops, careers academy, online education courses.
Flexi Time
Working from home
Very good overall but I do not think I will be applying back just as I am not that interested in the industry. I want to go into consultancy which IBM offer but is all based around tech which I am not that interested in.
The Culture
IBM definitely has one of the best social scenes among other placement students and colleagues. There is normally at least one event each week that goes on and then various special events and trips among the placement students. Within my team we go on monthly meals/drinks and then quarterly team days.
It is obviously very expensive to live in London. Going out is extremely expensive and you have to be aware of that before moving here. If I pay under £5 for a pint in London I would consider that reasonably cheap. However there are always places that have happy hour after work so you can find something very reasonably priced. Rent is always going to be expensive in London so you need to make sure you budget for this each month.. I pay £645 before bills.
Its London.. there is always things to do whether you have money or not. Always things going on that you don't have to pay for if you don't want to. Great bars and clubs and restaurants all over the city!!!
There are always activities to get involved with outside of work such as volunteering and sports activities.
