The Role
Really good experience working in a large corporate firm. Gives a breadth of experience.
I did feel my role was important as it played a vital part in my team. However, IBM is a big organisation so it can be hard to see how what you do contributes to the bigger picture and others work.
At the beginning of placement, all the acronyms and the work load can be confusing. Everyone was very facilitating and helpful if I ever had any questions and concerns.
There are quiet periods, but there is always work if you ask for it.
You are given a lot of responsibility in managing your own time and your own tasks.
The work ethic that I will take from placement will help me in my studies (the 9 to 5 perspective). Beyond that, it has given be an insight into an organization with great graduate opportunities and an insight into what I might want to do in my future (be it along the lines of my placement year or not).
The Company
Due to flexible working, the office is often very quiet.
Very well organised, welcome talks with health and safety greetings. Previous students ready to give a indepth handover on the arrival of new placement students.
I have developed a lot on my placement and IBM have Personal Development Managers who help with this.

The IBM graduate scheme is attractive as it is flexible and you get 2 years in Foundation whereby you can find what is right for you and your future.
The Culture
There is a number of placement students within IBM so the social aspect of a placement here is good.
Live and work in Portsmouth. Cost of living isn't too high.
It is a student area so the nightlife is good.
Due to there being a number of placement students and it being an area populated by university students, there where things to get involved with outside of work.
