The Role
I have enjoyed my placement, there were definitely moments where I felt my tasks were dull and not challenging enough. However, I have learnt a lot during my placement; it gave me exposure to working in a corporate environment.
I believe I felt valued majority of the times, however, there were times when I felt overlooked and my opinion and workload was not taken into consideration.
I saw a lot of changes in my department with managers leaving and moving job roles which was tough, however, my third manager was really involved and cared about my personal goals for my placement year and provided support to achieve those goals.
I have been very busy almost every day of my placement, however, there were times when I was free, with little to do. I reached out to my managers and asked them for more work.
I was given little responsibility to start with, however, as I progressed , I was given more and more responsibility.
I believe I have learnt some really valuable skills throughout the year; especially with spreadsheets, Project management and communication skills which will help me at university and my career after graduating.
The Company
The general atmosphere was really relaxed and friendly as I sat with other interns; I had the balance of working and socializing.
It was set-up really well; I had plenty of time with my handover, however, the changes in the business were not very smooth, I had to adapt quite a lot.
I definitely think they could have invested more in interns and the internship scheme in general, however, they did give me opportunities to get my First Aid certificate and take Project Management Fundamentals course.
I will definitely be applying back but it is not my first choice; I am glad for the opportunity to have worked in IBM as a placement student, however, I do not think I want to start my career as a graduate at IBM.
The Culture
Yes, the social side was really great ! We organised events twice a month and socialized during tea, breakfast and lunch breaks.
The cost of living was average, I found the commute a little bit difficult and expensive.
The nightlife was good, there were plenty of bars, cafes and clubs to socialise in.
There were more opportunities for boys with football club etc, however, girls had little to no opportunity to get involved in clubs and activities.
