The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed my Placement year and has helped me develop business skills, whilst also gaining great contacts and friends. Given both responsibility and support and everyone is very friendly and welcoming. Great student atmosphere within the office which provides balance of both working and social life.
Very friendly team and office environment. From the start, people were willing to help with any issues and very supportive with the direction you want to take in your Placement year. Great team morale, which allowed great honesty and building of relationships over the year and never felt like you were an Intern.
Good support by both task manager and additional development manager to make you comfortable in your role and also working at IBM. Guidance given according to what you want to get out of the placement. Lack of management in the office sometimes made it difficult to complete tasks and gain assistance.
Varied greatly day-to-day. Some days were fairly busy, whilst other days received few emails at all. Opportunities in quieter periods to make most of Placement year and undertake volunteering and take place in other events which is beneficial.
Given good amount of responsibility within the role, contacting people of different managerial status which was exciting. There are opportunities to add to your role and managers give you the support to do so. Additionally, there are opportunities to run events at IBM which gives great responsibility to keep intact the companies image.
Over the year, I have gained numerous business and life skills to take away for my final year at University and future career. Many opportunities to build upon presentation skills, time management alongside being trained on tools and applications used in your role.
The Company
At the start of the placement, there was a good buzz in the office, however over time less people came into the office. It can be very quiet in the office which can sometimes make it difficult to keep upbeat. Those employees in the office however, are very friendly and welcoming and always willing to help.
Very well organised and the team in-charge have great experience in dealing with the Placement students and running the Placement Scheme. Numerous events provide Placement Students to make the most of their year and the Placement Scheme team are always looking for ways to improve through our feedback which is good.
Alongside day-to-day role, development manager encourages you to develop your skills and provide contacts and opportunities to do this.
Flexi Time
Working from home
Good prospects when it comes to applying back as a Graduate and through talking to Graduates whilst in my Placement year, they are really enjoying their time which is encouraging. Information communicated on how to apply back to the organisation and willing to help with your application forms, etc.
The Culture
Really good social scene in the office and outside, which made the transition to work much easier. Formed strong relationships with Placement students over a number of business areas which was beneficial.
Good cost of living in Portsmouth and many places to visit over the year. Places to eat can be quite costly, but that is expected in a touristy place.
Good nightlife due to living near the University. Lots of bars and clubs to go to with fellow interns which was good fun.
No opportunities through IBM to undertake activities outside of work, but Portsmouth has many places to undertake activities of your choice.
