The Role
I really enjoyed my placement at IBM and it gave me a great insight into the world of HR at a global level. I was able to experience many areas whilst being based in Compensation and I was able to get involved with many opportunities.
I really felt valued by my team and felt like a regular employee, they pushed me to take on new challenges and to strength key capabilities.
Even with my manager being based in Scotland and myself in Portsmouth I felt really well supported and built up a good relationship with him. I was supported in taking on tasks outside of my role and making the most of my experience.
Fairly busy, everyday is different but there was very rare occasions when there was nothing to do.
I was given the a lot of responsibility more than what I was expecting and within my last 6 months of my placement I have been running projects and taking the lead on presentations.
I feel my analytical thinking has developed and my ability to manipulate and use data correctly. Also my presenting skills and confidence has grown.
The Company
The office in Portsmouth is generally busy and the atmosphere within HR is really good - everyone is working hard and collaborating, as well as this there is a great intern base in Portsmouth in all the departments so it is good to work and socialize with them also.
The IBM placement scheme is well set up and established - outside of everyday roles there is skills workshops and careers fairs as well as giveback opportunities to enhance your time at IBM.
There is plenty of online training which can be accessed and skills workshops and seminars.

IBM have a great graduate scheme and they run an intern-grad scheme to help interns that want to return apply. We do have to apply like everyone else but having internal knowledge and an IBM Placement Journal will defiantly help.
The Culture
Yes, there is a lot of placement students in Portsmouth so going out is good fun.
Portsmouth is reasonable compared to London for example.
The nightlife in Portsmouth is OK there are a range of clubs/bars and pubs - Albert Road is good fun!
As well as socializing the boys this year had a football league going - it really is up to you what you organize - I know the girls before us had a Netball side.
