The Role
I have really enjoyed my work placement, as it gives you great exposure to a fast moving business environment. It also gives you the opportunity to work with a large number of employees, which helps for you to get your name out there and get noticed. The only drawback would be that at times you do have a large number of tasks to handle so you will need to be organised.
I believe that I have been highly valued by my colleagues. When I say this I do not just mean the people I work with on a daily basis, as I have also received praise and recognition from senior management which is a real confidence boost.
I think I was given a great amount of support from my team and other colleagues in general, but this is all part of the culture at HP. The handover period at the start of the internship is a great help, as it lets you settle into your new role and you will also be supervised by your previous intern which will make the start of your internship much less stressful.
This is a difficult question to answer as the workload in this role can at times be quite varied, as at certain times of the month such as quarter close or new financial year you are very busy. But I would say that you will always have work you can be getting on with, it's a case of the more you put in the more you get out.
I think I was given a lot of responsibility throughout my placement which is great for me, as I believe this shows that as a team they believe in your ability and allow you to showcase your abilities. In this role in particular you will have the opportunity to liaise with a large number of senior employees, which I think is very important in placement year.
I think that this placement has really helped me in a number of ways, but some of the most important soft skills gained are confidence, time management skills and the ability to speak to people you may not have met before. But I have also picked up a number of other business skills like forecasting, project management and understanding of the Sales process.
The Company
The office has a good atmosphere which is a good mix of work and chatter. This allows you to get on with what work you wish to carry on with and also gives you the chance to build a rapport with colleagues.
The internship is very well setup as this placement opportunity has been running for a number of years now. This is a great benefit as it means your manager will be able to ensure your have the correct amount of work and it also means that the onboarding process at the start of the placement will take the shortest amount of time possible.
I believe that this part of the placement could possibly be improved on, it may have been slightly different this year as the company itself is undergoing a lot of change internally. But in my opinion you do not receive much training after the initial period of the placement. The company does invest in its people when it comes to events though as I have been invited to a number of events throughout my time at HP.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
Working from home
There are a number of roles which are appealing to me within the company. This is a great thing about companies the size of HP, there are so many varied opportunities that you are quite likely to find something that suits your career ambitions.
The Culture
There is a very good social scene within HP, but at times with this role in particular you are too busy to take part in some volunteering or social activities. But in all the HP Internship year has a very welcoming social atmosphere, with a number of roles available in the internship committee who help to organise a number of large event for interns or alternatively for both interns and HP employees.
The cost of living is quite reasonable in areas like reading, as there are more student parts of the town which offer more affordable housing. But again it is your choice you can live in more suburban areas if you wish and these houses will have slightly higher rental values.
The nightlife in Reading is good but there are only a number of clubs you would want to go to on a night out, the number of good bars/pubs in reading is much higher. You can also bare in mind that Reading rail station is only a 40mins train away from the centre of London.
Yes, there are a large number of opportunities to get involved in outside work, be it charity event, intern socials or sports teams and matches. this is one of the best parts about this internship is the sheer number of interns at HP, which allows you to enjoy some great events.
