The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement. I was very lucky to be put into a role which gave me lots to do and kept me busy whenever I was in the office!! I can't think back to a day where I have been sat around twiddling my thumbs and waiting for something to be given to me to do. The tasks I have been given this year have been thought provoking and allowed me to expand my skills set and learn a lot about marketing. Its been a brilliant year and I would highly recommend the IBM placement scheme to anyone looking around for a placement.
There hasn't been a point where I haven't felt part of the team; whether it is being included on team meetings and calls or being given sole tasks to complete for the team. Every team that I have worked in this year has made me feel part of the team and fully integrated me into everything being done. Everyone has been brilliant and given me tasks to do as well as projects for me to own which has been a brilliant experience; I did not expect to receive such a load of responsibility for projects on my placement year!!
I have received a lot of support both from my task manager and my personal development manager. They have both given me countless pieces of advice and guidance and have helped me find opportunities outside of my day to day role allowing me to experience other areas of IBM and help expand my skills set. I have regular day to day contact with my task manager who is always there to help me when required and also willing to give me projects to undertake which require a high level of responsibility.
Very busy, there hasn't really been a day where I haven't had something to do. The workload fluctuates throughout the quarter but even in the less busy holiday periods I still had stuff to do which meant that I was never sat around asking for work to be given to me. I have been given various tasks and projects from different areas of marketing and have been part of teams working on significant projects which have meant that my workload becomes a lot larger requiring me to work longer hours.
Each team that I was part of welcomed me into the team and gave me various roles within the team. I was given projects to run, whether it was for a short period of time or for the whole length of my placement, which meant I had a significant role to play with the business and various responsibilities throughout the year. I have been lucky that the teams I was put in have valued my presence and felt that they could trust me to take on tasks that have a high level of responsibility.
Before my placement I was hoping that I would learn and incredible amount and gain a lot of value from my time at IBM and now I realise how useful the placement was. I have learnt more than I can imagine over the past year and have got into a lot of routines which I plan to replicate when I return to university next year. The work ethic I have used while at IBM has helped me plan on how I am going to approach my studies next year and also the training I have received will help me in various areas also.
The Company
There was always a good vibe around the office. I sat in an area which was full of fellow marketing employees and sat, more specifically, around a group of interns in marketing. Everyone would always be very approachable in the office and everyone got along so there was good conversation flowing throughout the office. The level of people in our area tends to fluctuate but no matter how many people were in the office there was a good atmosphere.
Very organised from start to finish. The induction was very good to start with, great for meeting people and learning the ins and outs of our role while on placement. Then throughout the year we had regular training sessions and meetings throughout the year which were well publicized and planned out. We were constantly given updates on deadlines and timings for anything which made it very easy to know what was going on.
I was given a lot of training throughout the year which has helped me improve my skills and developed me as a person. They have spent a lot of time running skills sessions to help improve all the interns skills base to benefit us all in the future. The teams I worked in have also had regular sessions with agencies and meetings to help develop my skills and learn more about the role I was in and what I could do in the future if in a similar role

Very appealing, we received a lot of education on what roles are available and what the roles entail so that we can make the right choice when reapplying. The opportunities presented to me appeal greatly and I will definitely be reapplying to IBM. I have also been able to have a go and experience parts of those roles over the last few months of my placement to help confirm my choice of role to apply for to make sure that it is right for me.
The Culture
The social scene amongst the interns is absolutely brilliant, we have regular gatherings and outings which are great fun and everyone gets along with each other. It is the same story amongst fellow colleagues also, we have had team drinks on a number of occasions and it is a great chance for everyone to have a chat and to network amongst the marketing community and also those outside of it. There has also been gatherings between the interns and graduates within IBM so there is a good community there and we have also played football matches against each other.
I was lucky enough to be living at home while on placement and so wasn't having to pay rent. The social life in London wasn't very cheap but we were able to find places that weren't too expensive and we could all gather there and have a good time without having to spend a ridiculous amount of money. We also took the opportunity, while in London, to explore some of the more extravagant bars at a number of locations; some were relatively expensive but the experience balanced it out.
Nightlife was very good, there were a lot of bars that we visited throughout the year. The good thing about being in London was the use of public transport; it meant that no matter where a bar or club was it wouldn't be too hard to get to as there was easy access to get to places. This was brilliant because it meant that with interns living in various parts of London we could still all meet up for drinks and going out
There were lots of opportunities and we started a 7 aside football team and also an 11 aside football team which meant we were regularly playing sport. We were also able to go and do other activities such as watch sports matches and also go and do other activities such as go karting.
