The Role
I have really enjoyed my work placement and would strongly recommend working for Intel. I believe that working for Intel on a placement year is great because you are given challenging work and treated as a full time employee however also Intel has a relaxed but hard working atmosphere which creates a good integration from university into full time work.
I felt valued by my colleagues and never felt that I have been treated differently because I am an intern. I have worked well alongside different colleagues all with different grade levels. I have also attended social events with my team which helps to settle in.
I have weekly 1.1s with both my supervisor and manager, as well as 1.1s with a mentor, when I wish to have them. There is lots of support available and everyone is always willing to help.
At the beginning of my internship I was extremely busy however, after I had got to grips with my monthly tasks I had a bit more spare time. To fill my spare time I asked for extra work, which was always given, so I was never bored. Nearing the end of my internship I am fairly busy on a day to day basis.
You are given a lot of responsibility as an intern and if you were not doing your job they would have to hire someone else to fill your space. Having responsibility is great for your progression and helps you feel like a valued member of the team.
I have improved my excel, communication, problem solving, teamwork skills which will definitely help in my future jobs. I also believe my placement year will help in my final year modules such as accounting and taxation.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office is open, friendly and relaxed. No one has an office so everyone is approachable and willing to help.
I believe that the overall work placement was well organised. My handover month was well planned and organised and I had a plan of how I was going to best start my role at Intel. There was also an open day before we started which enabled us to meet the other interns and find people to live with.
Intel offer lots of training courses which interns are able to attend. I completed courses in excel, presentation skills, communication, out of the box thinking and more. Managers are also open to talking to you about how you want to develop yourself and your skills.

Intel offer a competitive wage as a recent college graduates and provide good bonuses and stock plans. There are also many different areas of work within Intel's finance department so Intel is a great place to work if you would like an overview of various departments.
The Culture
As there is such a large group of interns (over 40) there is a good social scene. Intel also have a sports and social committee who organise events such as pub crawls, nights out and weekend breaks- this year a group of interns visited Prague. However, Swindon's night life isn't the best but having a good group makes up for it.
Cost of living is very cheap with rent normally being under £300pm. There are also some cheap bars in Swindon and the cost of socialising can be small too. This means that although the wage may seem lower compared to other companies, your disposable income will not differ that much.
Night life in Swindon isn't great in terms of big clubs, however there are lots of nice bars that are open quite late. Wood Street is a nice place to spend an evening.
There are lots of opportunities to get involved in: Intel have committees such as sports and social, charity and publishing which enable you to work with people you wouldn't normally get to work with. There are also sporting activities you can take part in including netball, football and badminton.
