The Role
I really enjoyed interning with KPMG. I did an internship in Public Sector Audit , without ever having done any sort of accounting before. I found that everyone was really willing to help me, I asked a ton of questions and everyone was really nice about it and took time out to help me. I also found the work nicely challenging - it was fun to be learn something new and I had so much help from everyone around me that it never felt like a struggle.
This is something that I really appreciate about KPMG. I was treated really well and I felt like me and my opinions were respected. It's really nice to feel that way despite just being an intern.
I had so much support, and I got help with everything I asked for. I asked to speak to some graduates who had recently gone through the recruitment process and I was given all the relevant contact details. Everyone was willing to talk on the phone too and they always replied to emails promptly.
I had work to do, there was never a day when I went to work and I was just sitting around. I had sections of the audit assigned to me, and over the course of the internship, I was given more and more sections and more responsibility. The working hours for me were from 9am to about 6pm maximum. I always had the evenings and weekends free - all the interns would meet in the evenings and I travelled on weekends too.
I think I had a lot of responsibility, and I was pleasantly surprised that I was given that much responsibility. I had never done accounting before and I was still allowed to work on sections of the audit by myself. All my work was checked by someone later on, but I was allowed to work on the sections myself and I learnt so much as a result. Talking to a few graduates at KPMG, I understood that if you want more responsibility, KPMG helps you in gaining valid experience and training so that you can reach a position with more responsibility.
The skills I learnt through the internship will definitely be useful when I work on further audits after my degree is finished. The knowledge of the UK Public Sector is really useful for me as my degree directly relates to that, and I can relate my studies to a lot of real world examples now. Moreover, looking at all the accounts gives a really good overview of the organization and it's functioning so it's a good way to get started.Knowing about accounts in general is really helpful too.
The Company
In auditing, I spent most of my time at the clients office rather than at the KPMG Office. However, the atmosphere of working with my colleagues at KPMG, even if was at the clients office, was really great. Everyone is helpful, and works really hard, but everyone still makes jokes and it's a nice atmosphere to work in.
It was really well organized. There were days organized where interns shadowed a director/partner, we had a dinner with the partners and directors, a CSR day when we helped paint 2 classrooms in a local school. We knew which audit we were meant to go to, where and who to contact well in advance and it was a very smooth process.
Everyone spent quite a bit of time helping me out. I know that the graduates get an ACA - KPMG pays for the exams and for the classes too. KPMG paid for all my travel and meals and I do feel valued at KPMG.

Very appealing, I had a great experience with the internship and I would love to work for KPMG after my degree.
The Culture
Yes, the interns and graduates did meet quite a few times after work. In general, everyone is fun to be with and we had a really nice time!
I worked in Nottingham and I found it quite reasonable, especially compared to London.
It's fun, there are quite a few clubs, pubs and bars to go to. It was fun going out with the other interns.
Yes, there are quite a few active clubs that KPMG has e.g. Sports clubs. There were quite a few social events organized for the whole department and for the interns too.
