The Role
I really enjoyed my placement year at IBM. I felt I have agained alot in terms of knowledge and understanding of how a big successful business operates.
At no point throughout my placeement did I feel as though I was treated any differently than anybody else. I was treated like everyother employee and given responsibility from the begining.
I work from a location away from my managers and supervisors but felt like I could also get in contact with them if I needed. They were very supporting and helped me throughout my time at IBM with any problems I encountered.
To start with I found myself not very busy at all. I would have a report to do in the mornings then found myself picking up other peoples work throughout the day. However, as I continued in my placement I found myself being given more and more responsibility. By the end of my placement I was finding myself very busy throughout the week.
From the begining I was given a huge amount of responsibility. I was given reports to do which were being sent to senior managers.
I now have better understanding of the workplace and can see how my uni studies and the theories I have learnt fit in.
The Company
I worked from home 3 days a week. But the office where I was based was very quite. It was a nice place to go when I had lots of work to do and needed to fully concentrate. However, the quite office meant that it wasnt always a fun place to be.
I had a slight hiccup at the begining of my placement as my laptop was not ready for me to pick up so had to wait a week. However, apart from that everything else has ran smoothly.
IBM arrange a variety of training days throughout the placement year for all their students. I believe this firm does show it cares and is interested in the development of its students.
Flexi Time
Financial Bonus
Working from home
Very appealing. I will definitely be applying back for a graduate placement.
The Culture
Where I was based there were only me and 2 other placement students so there wasnt a big social scene at all. However, in the bigger locations the social scene seemed to be a strong part of the workplace.
Average costs.
Lots of clubs & bars. Full of students.
Yes. IBM do giveback opportunities which allow you to give something back into the community. They also are involved in events such as Wimbledon.
