The Role
I enjoyed getting a feeling for the big corporate world. Working with individuals from across the globe. I also felt that the opportunities to get involved with different projects outside of my role were fantastic. On the other hand I found my job role very admin and repetitive.
I found that most colleagues were very respectful, a few did not even realise I was an intern. As my role was integral to the team, my work was never under appreciated.
At IBM you are given 2 managers, a PDM and a task manager. I found my PDM to be very useuful and she always put my best interests first. However, I found there to be tension between myself and my task manager. This led to an awkward relationship where it was difficult to ask for guidance.
I felt my role was full, at times i had too much to work on but learnt how to prioritise. I also felt that getting involved in giveback helped keep me busy during quieter times.
I was given a full job role, and was not being handed typical intern jobs like organising meetings. I was completely responsible for the account code structure and loading signings into the system.
I had a specific aim to improve my communication skills. I feel I have been able to do this by getting involved in conference calls, giving presentations and getting involved in projects in the local community. This will help me in my final year of university. I felt the training received was useful, but it was given quite late on in the experience. My job role has not related to my university degree, so I will not have more academic skills when returning to university.
The Company
There was a good mix of interns, which made for a social atmosphere during lunch and also good social activities outside of work. I found the people in the office to be very engrossed in their work, leaving a very quiet and almost dull atmosphere
The job role was very well laid out and organised. The structure of the placement scheme was good and the reviews were really helpful. The one downside was that you are expected to extend past your actual contract end date.
The handover received from the previous intern was excellent. We were given training relevant to our roles. Also, the foundation team organised sessions to improve soft skills and enhance our chance of future employment.

You are entitled to apply back internally, and go through an internal recruitment process, but you are by no means guaranteed a job.
The Culture
Many interns lived together, and there were always fun nights out being organised.
Although I lived at home, Portsmouth is generally average in terms of rent- ranging from £300-500 pcm based on sharing.
Range of bars, pubs and clubs to go to.
Giveback range was very good. There were also social events organised within the location
