The Role
I have thoroughly enjoyed my work placement with Cummins. Everyday is different and comes with new responsibilities which aid your development in the role and as a young professional.
I feel extremely valued by my colleagues. The work I am involved with is on the same level as full-time professionals in my department and every bit of work contributes to team performance.
Support and guidance is always available first hand when I need it. My manager is situated at the desk next to my own and is always happy to help and provide guidance when needed.
Each day is busy but not overwhelming - the right level of work needed to occupy the day and keep me actively contributing to the department.
The level of responsibility is greater than I ever imagined having as a placement student. Some items of work produced have been used by the high management and leadership team. Not only at Cummins Turbo Technologies (the division in which I work) but throughout other Cummins business units.
I have developed professional writing, time management, leadership and teamwork skills - all of which are utilised during university. I feel upon returning to university and graduation I will perform better after developing these skills.
The Company
The general atmosphere is sociable and friendly. Each individual is approachable.
The work placement was well organised with a work plan on arrival. This hasn't been strictly kept due to ad-hoc work and requests coming through to the department - however the completion of the work plan is likely upon completion of placement.
The company invests large amounts in developing its placement students. I have been on all available training courses necessary to develop the skills needed for the role and knowledge of the organisation and products. However travel approval for events is limited.

The future employment prospects are very appealing with graduate development programmes in my subject area.
The Culture
Cummins takes on a large amount of placement students each year. over 30 at the site I am positioned - we all get along and regularly arrange social events after work and at the weekend.
The cost of living was good, particularly considering the generous wage.
The nightlife is appealing to students (in a student town) and Leeds/Manchester nightlife can be accessed easily.
There are company sports clubs which students can get involved with outside work.
