The Role
I was very pleased with my placement at Cummins. I was given a great insight into many aspects of the company and was given many opportunities to develop my skills and knowledge.
I felt very valued by my colleagues both in the systems department and other departments. From day one the team accepted me as one of there own and made me feel very welcome and comfortable. Every team member was there to help each other and were very open to passing on skills and knowldege
Throughout my time at Cummins I was given much support and guidance from both my Supervisor and many other of my colleagues. Everyone at Cummins will be open to supporting you and give you guidance on request. It is important to understand from the offset that there is no question that is too simple.
Generally I was busy on a day to day basis however at times the work rate does drop off but it can also rise when big projects are running. I was never without any work to do however if you run out of work it is up to you to go ask for more.
From the offset at Cummins I was given much responsibility which surprised me. You don't get treated like a student in any way and are asked to complete important tasks and projects that effect Cummins on both a local and global level.
Much of the skills I developed and training I received will assist me in completing my studies on return to university. Some of the main skills that I have developed that will assist me at university are project management, time keeping, work management, conflict management and professionalism. I now feel I could manage and work with any team which will play a big part in completing my degree and for future jobs.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was very laid back, however everyone in the department was very aware of what tasks were to be completed and of what pressure the department was under. Every member of the team would have general chats as long as tasks are being completed.
I feel the work placement was set up very well. The first few weeks was a handover period in which the current placement student helped me settle in and understand my role. There was a clear guide of what training I would complete throughout the year and key points within the placement would be made clear. Throughout my first few weeks I was given important inductions from management which covered rules and procedures including what my peers would be expecting for me. The whole set up seemed to work very well.
I feel that the training that I received from Cummins was satisfactory. It was training that I would expect when joining any company. There were very few placement based training sessions available. Most of them were general sessions in which the student would have to ask to participate.

Future employment prospects are very good with Cummins. Once in the organisation it is very easy to develop your career and move up the ladder.
The Culture
The social scene at work between fellow placement students was good. Everyone has breakfast and lunch together and if you lived locally with the other student they would spend the evenings and weekends together.
I didn't live in the local area that I worked in so my opinion on this is very limited. However from speaking to fellow placement students the cost of living in the local area was very cheap as was the social life.
Again I didn't live in the area that I worked in but I heard the social life was not very good. Therefore the students that live here used to travel a small distance to other towns and city's.
Outside of work I attended many work meals, sporting events and parties with colleagues. There is always something do to outside of work however sometimes I would have to go look for it.
