The Role
My placement year at HP was invaluable - I can honestly say it has been hands down one of the best years I've ever had.
Your role at HP, is a real job. If you do not do it, then the rest of the team will struggle, you are very valued at HP and have real responsibilities and roles which are crucial to the team!
This depends massively on your individual manager, mine was fantastic and we would have Bi-weekly meetings but I knew I could go to her at any point if I needed anything. If you are proactive you can also find mentors, the majority of people at HP are very willing to help, you can get support in all areas along with getting involved in many tasks to gain experience.
My day to day job varied considerably due to my role in Marketing and Events so no day was ever the same. In the run up to an event I would be incredibly busy as imagined. I really enjoyed having a large work load as it really increased my time management skills over the year and your days go so quickly!
As you develop in your role your responsibility greatens, I now run and attend events on my own without campaign managers. Dependent on how self motivated you are and the effort you put in this will affect how much responsibility you are given. In most roles your job is unique and you get given roles which the campaign managers can't do so they rely on you to do it.
My confidence levels have increased considerably along with my time management skills these will definitely be the major skills I bring back to my final year. I have always been self motivated and willing to learn but this is something that I have realised is really seeked upon in the work force, you will get a lot of credit for being proactive and wanting to learn and get involved in many areas, so my biggest advice is don't be afraid to give everything a go.
The Company
The office is a very relaxed environment with the right balance of professionalism. There are around 60 interns based in HP's head office so the intern community is so much fun, this is one of the major plus points of our placement. There is always activities going on from charity sales, ping pong tournaments to evening quiz's.
The placement is set up extremely well, as it is 13 months you have a 1 month hand over period from the previous intern, this is great as it means your not thrown in at the deep end and have through training before being left to your own devices. There are a lot of activities planned through out the year for the interns and this is reflected by good planning.
There are many opportunities to grow and develop, if you are proactive about this you can get involved in almost anything. Majority of the staff at HP are extremely willing to help. There are also many personal training courses that you can do independently if you want to grow.

There are unfortunately no Marketing Grad schemes at HP, but I 100% would like to rejoin HP in the future then move around the company to find my perfect role.
The Culture
The social scene is incredible, we have a very close community at HP. We have had organized weekends away to the craziest bar crawls. Social Thursdays normally mean drinking on a school night - whoopsies!
Most of the interns live in Reading which is a very studenty area so relatively cheap. You can easily live off your wage and have a very good social life.
Reading nightlife is good fun, its not as crazy as some cities but there are some really good clubs to choose from. There are many student nights to choose from!
Yes! Whether it being just the interns organizing weekends away, nights out or other fun activities we would always be up to something.
